A new vst instrument for scratching
A new vst instrument for scratching
I'm taking my first commercial release to market now and I'm running a kickstarter with instrument pre sales to get my company off the ground.
I am fully licensed by NI to release instruments under the Reaktor Player platform and this instrument will be a Powered by Reaktor release similar to Razor, Monark, Molekular etc...
It will not require the full version of Reaktor to run, it is it's own standalone application built on the Reaktor platform technology.
Introduction and overview videos.

Kickstarter...

Please let me know if you have any questions about this instrument.
Thanks to everyone here for all their help over the years.
Michael.

Re: A new vst instrument for scratching
I wish you all the luck man but I've used a number of these kinds of plugins to do scratching, one of the best I used was actually a native plugin for old Buzz Tracker way back in 2003 which allowed scratching using the mod wheel and did some automated cuts which could be adjusted using another control on the keyboard, as you moved it synced to the beat so it was child's play to make some scratch sounds. I've been a scratcher for 15 years and have used digital scratches only a few times in a production simply because they always sound digital which makes it sound very unnatural. Doesn't ever have that nice high pitch "scratch/scrape" sound we know from artists such as Run D.M.C (who?) or Herbie Hancock (what?) which is what started my love affair.
I think the art of the scratch is dying, was a big thing in hip hop in the 80s-90s and one reason I spent years practicing the art form using decks, CDX and even webcams over painted vinyl (before timecode). I do like the fact this plugin integrates with timecode vinyl and even pad controllers so there are a lot of features that are interesting, but it just has that all familiar digital scratch sound. Most youngsters these days wouldn't even notice tho.

Re: A new vst instrument for scratching
It was horrible really, not suited for scratching at all.mike_o wrote:could you elaborate on what this means, I've never heard of this and you seriously peaked my curiosity.jestermgee wrote:even webcams over painted vinyl (before timecode)
I think it was a feature of a program (by memory) called Atomix (around 2003 or so). When I lived with a mate he had decks but never bothered to replace his cartridges so I found this basic DJ software that had a feature where you could mount a webcam over a turntable and it would create a timecode from the image of the centre of the record. I found it worked a bit better if you painted one half black/white.
It had latency which made it almost useless for scratching, mainly for adjusting playing files. I did try and get something useful out of it but ultimately gave up and ended up buying a Numark CDX for practice, even though I initially went to to buy a Technics DZ1200 the CDX had just come out and the guy in the store convinced me it was a better buy for scratching... which it was and I still have it and it still works flawlessly.

Alright, let me know which color scheme looks the best to you.
The left is the standard color of the controls and the right is what color they turn when you trigger a command.
let me know what you like the most, 1-5 from the top down.
A lot of people said that they like the instrument but hate the interface, so let me know what color scheme you like.

It seems to me that a lot of people are interested in this instrument but they dislike the user interface, so we're now working with a great designer on getting a new and improved UI put together.
we'll see how things look next week after he finishes what he's doing and we can get started on the new UI design.

Re: A new vst instrument for scratching
my thoughts on the designs:
the first design looks like Scratch Master Pro: Freddy Krueger's Christmas Edition.
the layout of the new design isn't particularly good either; it looks amateur. spacing of elements is poor and the font is too chunky for the job (mixing of font sizes needs to be done more carefully too). the flat look can work, but the design needs to effortlessly separate the controls into functional sections. and those drop down menus are really ugly.
maybe have a look at Valhalla DSP for some examples of similar flat-look interfaces:
