multiple takes in session question

Post by Sebastian » Fri Sep 14, 2018 3:59 pm

Hi all,

Been Googling this but too specific it seems.

When I start writing a tune, I typically need to sketch out various melody takes for each song part. I use Session View.

Example:

Scene 1
Track 1: Piano Verse (midi)
Track 2: Voice 1st melody (audio)

Duplicate Scene 1

Scene 2
Track 1: Piano Verse (same exact one as on Scene 1)
Track 2: Record Voice 2nd melody

Duplicate Scene 1 or 2

Track 1: Piano Verse (same exact one as on Scene 1 or 2)
Track 2: Record Voice 3rd melody

I keep doing this multiple times until I have enough melodies I will choose from.

Is there a quicker and smarter way workflow wise to minimize duplicating and erasing clips in this scenario? I would like to not have to stop the recording between the different vocal takes.

I have found lots of stuff on Arrangement view like Loop Recording.

No Loop recording or Grouping in Session view?

No Loop Recording like Arrangement in Session. Session doesn't have a time ruler. Personally I think recording takes in Session is easy, just launching another Clip for another take is easy enough for me.

Session and Arrangement are not really meant to be like 2 separate DAWs, from which you pick one to use.

Live is both Session and Arrangement, they are meant to be used together really, and some stuff can only be done in one or the other.

For example, you can just keep playing the looped MIDI in track 1 in Session, while recording multiple takes in track 2 in Arrangement (with or without loop recording).

It helps if you have a Launchpad or Push, to launch Clips easily.

For your example workflow you can also try "removing the stop button", maybe it will help you:

Then you could keep playing the MIDI in Piano 1, while launching Clips in the armed track 2.

ClyphX has an action that splits a Session Clip every X bars (can be a fraction, like 0.25).

It is: [] Clip Split X

But some editing is still easier to do in Arrangement, due to stuff like "Slide Waveform":

Great info, thank you, will be experimenting with it.

I understand what you mean about working with both views. I grew up on Arrangement view and moved to Session for songwriting bc of the speed and ease to try out different song sections and their variations (Scenes).

What about Group & Comping various vocal takes in Session? I know I can Group but havent been able to do this like this

Not sure one can do much comping in Session besides using Simpler or slicing audio, and playing the slices with MIDI (or launching Clips in Legato mode, maybe also Gate launch mode).

All the tutos I've seen are for Arrangement, like:

Live needs a good comping mode. Mutlitple recordings should be shown as multitrack and the user should be able to slice the parts he/she wants. Like how Logic and Reason do these things. Live now creates one long track when doing loop recordings which doesn't make sense. Only when you want to find the perfect loop but not when you need to find the perfect clips.
