Can't play clip on "In"- can't use MIDI controller on "Auto"

Post by bank-manager » Sat Sep 22, 2018 7:56 pm

Noob questions probably. Please tell me I'm doing it wrong.

I have a softsynth MIDI mapped and hardwired to my external control surface (actually a synth itself but that got nothing to do with it). The MIDI mapping is done & saved within the softsynth, not with Live.

So far so good, I can play and record clips and automation while I'm on "Monitor In" - but then I cannot playback recorded MIDI clips.
To play back recorded MIDI clips I switch to "Monitor Auto" - but then I cannot modify parameters of my softynth with my external MIDI controller any more nor record automation.

Please tell me I'm doing it wrong.

Please don't tell me I need to re-map everything through Live's **** macro-parameter-whatnot-panel. How can such a thing stick till version 10 of a DAW? A DAW that's made for live use. I'm starting to regret my expensive Live Suite and Push 2 purchase.

Doing it wrong

Monitor: auto. Track arm record active.

This allows us to play the devices on the armed track with hardware controlers (keyboards, etc) and simultaneously hear the clip content. Or do either, or both. Its rare we need to switch that to IN or OFF. Auto allows everything when the track is armed. Multiple tracks may be armed to play multiple tracks at the same time.

To use a hardware controller such as a "mixer" type device is automatically handled in the prefernces and requires a single click to select the right controler(s)
