Recording with M-Audio Venom

Post by likeabaker » Wed Oct 24, 2012 5:09 pm

Hey I'm a complete ableton noob. I want to record with my M-Audio Venom via USB. I know it's possible because the user manual says so. Please explain to me like I'm 5.

Select Venom is Ableton Playback devices, launch Vyzex Venom Editor and press USB Record button.

Thanks. Where do you select venom as an ableton playback device, in ableton, or vyzex? Also is the usb record button on ableton or vyzex

The first part of this video should help with basic setup. Ignore the later part about Max4Live.

What the video doesn't explain is using Venom as an Ableton audio playback device and thus enabling Venom's audio to be recorded via USB. This functionality is only present when using Venom as an audio interface. The original poster is after information relating to this specific setup which I have answered. Likeabaker needs to do a little research to achieve his goal.

Set up for audio device is in audio preferencs of Ableton Live.
i.e select M-Audio Venom as Audio interface.

The Venom has Local On/Off and USB Device ON/Off also, which you may want to look at.

You select them On/Off via Edit button and corresponding key on the Keyboard of the Venom.

I did consider using the audio interface within the Venom, but didn't like having a redundant Focusrite saffire 6 interface which
makes my set up easy to use in live recording sessions.

A friend is setting up a small studio and thinking of getting a Venom from thomann to fit his set up, (I can't say as I blame him, as
the audio interface seems pretty stable)

Hi, I'm trying to help a friend setup his venom m audio. He is only getting audio in from the sounds that are incorporated inside the venom, but we need just the midi to control vst, etc. Thanks

Hi I sold the Venom a couple of years ago, however as with a lot of synths you can;

A: set the 'Local@ sounds to OFF which disables the synth's own sounds.

B: change the Synths midi out functions Channels 1-16 and disable the midi function as well. i.e Toggle ON/OFF

You also need to set up Ableton Live to receive the Midi from the hardware (Venom) which you do in the preferences panel.

The Venom isn't a control device in Ableton Live so you need only the basic MIDI setup in the preferences box.

All this is better explained by downloading the Venom manual from M-Audio.

Venom is a legacy product now.

Hope that helps.
