Slate Media Technology is looking for beta testers for Raven

Post by Slate Media Technology » Mon Sep 24, 2018 8:18 pm

Hey Ableton Forum,

Slate Media Technology is currently looking for users of the Raven MTi 2 who are interested in beta testing an updated version of the Raven software.

http://slatemt.com/raven-mti2

We're interested in hearing the opinions from users who use the Raven with Ableton on a regular basis.

If you'd like to participate, let us know!

Does this update include Ableton for PC? I don't own a Raven, but I'd be willing to give it a shot if this update includes Windows.

Honestly, Push 2 is a much more interactive experience in Live than the Slate software for the Raven as it stands, was hoping for a beta of whatever they're working on, but as it stands I can't really recommend it compared to Lives own offerings. Now if you're a wiz at Max 4 Live you would get huge benefits from the Raven, since you could design finger sized interfaces etc.

All that said, 999 or whatever it costs isn't some massive leap up in price from simply purchasing a touch screen, you get a multi touch overlay for mixing in Live, and UPDD plus a speciallized version of V-Control comes with it to smooth out the experience on OSX.

Even if you used ‘finger sized’ controls, they’d need to be Designed for touch or multitouch. A lot of standard clickable things are not entirely equivalent.

For instance, many things in Live, or in vsts, even with a touch screen, do not react until they sense movement on the point at which you’ve touched them. If you play the ‘keyboard made for touch’ from the m4l site, it plays like a piece of shit because it does not trigger at touch, it triggers at touch..and then moderate rub or release. It’s a lot like a mouse behavior, you do an initial press of your mouse button....and might hesitate before you release it. There are a number of behaviors associated with that in how a lot of things are designed to react.

Your best bet right now is the new TouchAble Pro .......but now, the question is are you looking for something to mix and experiment with or are you looking to edit things? This is the only area where the Slate really shines. It has midi and a GUI for midi input which should be expected, but also a large assortment of editing keyboard shortcuts etc. but you’ll still be resorting to a mouse if you even attempt the smallest bit of editing in Arrangement View. On top of that, the angle of your screen and how close it is to your body can have a major impact on your experience. In most cases, it’ll be so fatiguing to attempt to use touch that you might give up on using it. ...especially for long editing sessions... but for quick fun and jamming, TouchAblePro has your number (and it is nice that it is actually Designed for touch...wish Ableton would finally give in and implement touch). .

Don't completely agree, Slate instantiated the gestures for zooming with the Raven, so smaller adjustments on a DAW like Live with tiny parts is possible. I actually enjoy the whole LED screen on desktop part of the Raven, I'm nearsighted though so there's that. :) Almost all the adjustments you make to a plug in are not affected by your example of "not triggering at touch" which I've never experienced, all buttons on screen react without hitting them more than once or pressing on the screen etc. Mostly the disappointing thing about Live and the Raven is other DAWs have extensive listed of keyboard shortcuts so the Ravens Macro controls are pretty useful, Live is click drag etc, on a lot of things other DAWs have shortcuts for, and yeah none of it is really optimized for touch screens, but Live 10 did significantly improve that with the addition of 'Pen Tablet Mode' which should be on for using the Raven etc.

I’m going to have to say you’re at least partially wrong on the touch behavior part of things. And I’m not referring to Raven, but windows in general.

Unless a vst or daw UI is designed for touch implementation, things like tapping a button or triggering are definitely not active until there is a touch and then movement. And this happens in a lot of situations. If you touch something and hold your hand perfectly still at the moment of touch, the touch point either might not respond or has a delayed reaction.

Even with a tablet mode, that helps for jumpy behavior of many devices, but does not resolve the touch problem.

First VSTi I open Repro 1, taping the buttons on the sequencer works exactly like it should. Opening Nomad Factory effects plug, no GUI changes in years and years, definitely not optimized for touch screens, tap does exactly what a single click does on all buttons. Tapping all tracks in Ableton muted them all, first try.

Did you attempt this on a PC or with a generic touch screen? Like I mentioned Slate uses some third party applications along with their software, so you're probably correct for generic touch screens, and Windows etc, but you're wrong in terms of the Raven. UPDD and V-Control Pro are both used by Slate to get a better touch screen experience.
