Beta 7! Live 5.0.2b7 is online!
Beta 7! Live 5.0.2b7 is online!
Hi folks,
we just uploaded a beta version of the upcoming bug fix update Live 5.0.2.
This beta is free for every Live 5 user.
With this beta we come closer to the final release of Live 5.0.2 but there
are still issues that would need a verify so big thanks for your support and
your patience.
Use the following links to download the beta:
Mac: http://www.ableton.com/_common/download ... e502b7.dmg
Win: http://www.ableton.com/_common/download ... e502b7.zip
Please send all beta related feedback to [email protected].
Current version: Live 5.0.2b7
Expire date: 2005-10-04
This versions has also some limitations:
- No manual is included
- No content is included
This version has enabled our bug reporter.
You will notice it when restarting Live after experiencing a crash.
Because of the crash reporter the "restore from undo.cfg" mechanism is
disabled in this beta.
Furthermore the Windows version has additional debug code to dump
information into the log file. Therefore the Windows version is a bit
slower as the final version (something between 5% to 15%).
When starting live 5.0.2b7 for the first time it should open the Beta lesson
which also contains the change log.
Kind Regards,
Alex
Change log Live 5.0.2b6 - 5.0.2b7
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Improvements:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
When changing a running clip's loop parameters (including the start marker), the clip's play position jumps as it did in Live 4. It seems that most people prefer this behavior, and it causes the confusing orange dot to appear less frequently.
When Live runs as MIDI clock slave the warper modes "RePitch" and "Complex" sound nasty because the continuous tempo variations. Now we use a more averaged tempo which should at least reduce the artifacts of "RePitch" and "Complex" warp modes. This was a kind of last time change so please let us know if something behaves different to previous Live 5 versions concerning "RePitch" and "Complex" warp when running as MIDI clock slave.
Some changes of the grain delay length for the "Texture" and "Tones" warp modes to make the sound more similar to Live 4. Depending on the settings there are still differences to Live 4.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[01] Bug: Context menu in warper view
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Platform: All
Live would crash when doing context menu commands in the warper view, such as "Set 1.1.1 here" etc. This one was introduced within the previous beta Live 5.0.2b6.
Status: Fixed
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[02] Bug: Loading Set with armed tracks
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Platform: All
Depending on the path length of the corresponding sounds folder Live would crash when loading a self contained set with armed tracks.
Status: Fixed
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[03] Bug: Play selection on empty arranger selection
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Platform: All
When the arranger selection would be empty and the song would be started by the 'Play Selection' command, the loop button would be switched off until the song would stop.
Status: Fixed
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[04] Bug: Scrub during 'Play Selection'
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Platform: All
Jumping and scrubbing in the arrangement during 'Play Selection' would cause the song to stop. Now changing the song position turns 'Play Selection' into normal playing
Status: Fixed
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[05] Bug: Deleting files
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Platform: All
Live would not be able to delete some files when they are in 'busy' state (e.g. scanned by a virus scanner).
Status: Fixed
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[06] Bug: Mouse over on clips
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Platform: All
The mouse over on clips to display the name of their corresponding physical file would not work for wider tracks.
Status: Fixed
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[07] Bug: Double modal dialogs
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Platform: Windows only
Live would allow to open several instances of the same modal dialog (e.g. "Render to Disk", "Quantize",...) at the same time via menu short-cut. This could lead to several crashes or inconsistencies.
Status: Fixed

BRILLIANT! This is so much better, thanks so much for doing this... I think most of the people who wanted playhead scrubbing back will be satisfied with this..Alex wrote: When changing a running clip's loop parameters (including the start marker), the clip's play position jumps as it did in Live 4. Midi control of the start point is now a whole instrument in itself! I'm having too much fun with this new update....
And the cpu spikes while scrubbing complex warp clips I was having seem to be gone as well
once again, nicely done!

Yes thank you, no more reverting and orange dot when warping!
Here is a little suggestion:
As we can resize tracks now and rename them in their slots it´s good to enlarge the space for the name of the clip in clip view too for a better reading while typing, so that you can always read the whole name.
Same for the physical sample´s path and name, where the name when it´s a long path is not fully displayed.
Greetings
This one I forgot to mention all the time.[06] Bug: Mouse over on clips

what about a similar behaviour for the whole program? as it is now, several instances of live can be startet (do people really work with more than one instance at the same time?). if you have live opened and doubleclick an *.als file, it gets opened in a new instance. it would be nice to have an option (in the preferences) that allows only one instance of live running at the same time! this way doubleclicked *.als files would get opened in the first (already opened) instance and an accidental second doubleclick on the programicon wouldn't open another instance of live ...
thank you!

Hello Abletonians,
after my first happiness from my first post here I´ve found out (did not exactly read the text before) that you changed a lot more then just the new warping behaviour wich was a mess, but I think it´s a big step backward now.
I know there was a big thread about bringing back playhead scrubbing and you introduced the new playhead scrubbing in clip view wich was accepted by most of the users I think, now we where used to the clips playback pos decoupled from the startpoint and now "Bang" everything is changed back to mix betweenL4 & L5 behaviour without that people really have asked for this.
Perhaps it has a technical reason that forced you to change this back (perhaps the not easy manageable F.O.D.). but if not then it´s far to radical to change such a big improvement from L4 to L5 now back.
Beside the new warping method the F.O.D. was understandable so far, I´ve not had any problems in the last betas.
The new (old) behaviour now is very counterintuitive for the future as ex. when you use a midicontroller to control your clips startpos (wich is the way to go for a mouseless operation) for retriggering the clip afterwards in his slot, you scrub the playpos now, wich normaly is not wanted.
I´m a bit disappointed now and sure I´m not the only one!
If someone could perhaps make a statement about this.
Now back to work with the new L5b7 (build L4.4.9alpha)

I think for this situation we need a modifier so that you can have the option between having the start position affect the play position (like LIVE 4) and having it NOT affect it (like the first release of LIVE 5). It's the only way to make everyone happy.
I see what you mean, in some (or most) cases it's better to have it the 5.0.1 way because now when you want to retrigger the same clip at different start positions, moving the start marker causes the play pos to go all over the place which isn't always what we want
We also need a MODIFIER as said before for MIDI select on launch so that you can also just select clilps without launching them! Then we'd have a very flexible and MIDI controllable live DJing and improvising tool...
Yay to modifiers!

stay the course
I understand how vocal people were in opposition to the L5 Scrub/Clip Position issue, but please STAY THE COURSE in the 5.02 release!!!
Please bring back the original L5 scrubbing procedure!!!!
Perhaps just make Scrubbing behavior an option in the preference menu? I understand that Live can be used in vastly different ways, and that the old scrubbing procedure has value to many.
The orange dot is our friend. I'm sure gigging professionals and true creative mixing artists prefer to not have their play positions jerked about in an unmusical way.
I personally never found it confusing, but liberating.

Re: stay the course
unfortunately after my initial excitement about this beta I have to agree with this.KU wrote:I understand how vocal people were in opposition to the L5 Scrub/Clip Position issue, but please STAY THE COURSE in the 5.02 release!!!

It is now impossible to move a currently playing clip's start position on the fly without having the play position jump all over the place!
cheers for trying to make us all happy tho
Re: Beta 7! Live 5.0.2b7 is online!
I just about fell off my chair when I read this specific issue was addressed with this beta since it was set to be a major show stopper for my own scenario !Alex wrote: When Live runs as MIDI clock slave the warper modes "RePitch" and "Complex" sound nasty because the continuous tempo variations. The averaging of incoming MIDI Clock has definitely resolved the problems I was having in this thread:

Many, many, many thanks Abletons !!!!

Re: stay the course
Hey KU, I disagree here. The Live 4 scrubbing method can actually be very musical, especially in this new beta now that start position is midi mappable.KU wrote:I'm sure gigging professionals and true creative mixing artists prefer to not have their play positions jerked about in an unmusical way.
The way I'm doing it with this beta is I assign buttons on my midi controller all mapped to the midi CC assigned to clip start postion. Then have those buttons send values in increments of 8. i.e. button 1 sends value 8, button 2 sends value 16, etc. This gives you the ability to immediately move the start position to a beat somewhere in the clip by pressing one of the buttons.
Doing it this way you can really jam out a clip in cool ways with the Live 4 style scrub
I do agree we need both scrubbing styles since they are both very useful in their own situations.
Since we have seen and experienced both of them why not give us the choice (if it can be done bug free of course!)
cheers
I did a search on the forum and read all the bugfix reports, but didn't see any of my problems.
I use LIve 5.01
1: Yesterday I used the "Capture and Insert Scene" command in session view. The playing clips were copied to a new scene but several clips had their start markers moved! This is a disaster of course. I am in the middle of production so as a workaround I then proceeded to manually copy clips to make new scenes.
2: I have been getting a lot of "stuck notes" lately. When I change a scene (and a clip is suposed to stop) or sometimes when I stop Live a note will keep playing indefinitely sometimes.
It happens mostly to VSTs (but I think it also has happened to Simpler once so it might be Live)
Are you aware of these issues?
If not I can try to reproduce the problem and send you the Liveset.
I think the stuck notes thing might only happen when arrangements get complex...
what is the maximum file size I can email to you?
Thank you so much for your time. Ableton is amazing!
