Envelope follower: is it possible to map more than one control to a single map?

Post by fabiospark » Sun Feb 17, 2019 12:51 pm

To learn how different settings of a reverb predelay will affect a vocal track
I added an effect rack with five instances of the same reverb where only the
predelay value is different in each instance.
In this way I can just solo a chain and listen to the difference.

I also need to "sidechain" the amount of dry/wet signal of the reverb
with the volume of the vocals so I put an envelope follower before
the effects rack and I would like to map all the five dry/wet knobs of the five
different reverbs instances to a single map of the envelope follower:
is this possible? If yes, how?

Thanks.

Luckily this is a core library M4L effect, so it's even in the manual: 26.2.1 Envelope Follower
To assign an additional mapping target, click on the button at the top-right of the display, click any of the unassigned Map switches and click on another parameter in Live. A total of eight parameters can be assigned.

Thanks for your reply.

My question was a little different.
I wondered if it was possible to assign more than one Ableton parameter
to a single map button of the envelope follower.
I think not.

But in my case I found the solution:

- assign to a macro knob of the effects rack the same parameter of different effects instances in the chain
- then assign the macro knob to a map button in the envelope follower

In this way, with one single map button you can change as many parameters you like,
provided that the amount of variation you need is the same for all of them

Thanks.

Mh. I don't really get the difference. The (up to) eight maps all follow the same envelope, there is only one set of envelope controls.

So either I'm oversimplifying or you're overtinking it, but it's good that you've found a way that works for you.

No, you were correct.

I only thought to group the parameters in the macro so you can
change the follower min and max values once to affect all the grouped
parameter.

If you use five maps to control the same parameter (lets say the dry/wet %) in five instances
of the same effect and you want to change the min/max values on all of them,
you will have to change those values five times in the five different maps of the follower.
As I'm testing things I'm going to change those values many times so it's one operation
agaist five for every change.

Also, in this way you leave the other maps free for other envelope automations,
should you ever need them.

But thank you again for taking the time to share your knowledge.
