M4L Macro Mapping = Glitchy Audio?

Post by parfaitbeaucoup » Wed Feb 20, 2019 4:28 pm

Hi there,

I'm experiencing some frustrating behavior using M4L to modulate various Wet/Dry knobs in Ableton.

I'm using this wonderful M4L patch: http://www.maxforlive.com/library/devic ... 4502#12690

But when I use it to map to the Wet/Dry of a chorus or a verb, the audio is very glitch when I move the knob while playing. This happens with another similar M4L patch (multistage knob) so I don't think it's a problem with these patches themselves.

However, when I map the Wet/Dry directly to the knob (bypassing M4L), there are no artifacts, so it seems to be a problem with M4L.

Anybody have any advice on this? I really hope there's a way around it! Happy to provide samples. The sound is similar to the sound of moving the Size knob while a reverb is active -- you hear the little digital pops. But I've never experienced this with W/D knobs, those are always smooth for blending.

Best,
Devon

Did you try to map those same parameters to Live's LFO to see if you get glitches too?

The stock LFO MIDI plugin? I didn't. Good idea, so if I do that and it doesn't create artifacts then it's safe to say the issues lies with the max patch?

At least we could narrow down the problem.
Also please try in a live set as empty as possible. With just a sound source, the M4L device, and a return track containing the reverb.

I was able to confirm that moving the Wet/Dry of a Chorus effect is smooth with MIDI mapping, but introduces artifacts using the M4L patch.

For reverb, it was glitchy with both MIDI mapping and M4L mapping. In the past (Live 9), I never had an issue with Wet/Dry introducing artifacts either way I went about it.

That's weird, I can't reproduce.
Did you follow Chapelier's advice (empty set...)?

I did! I’ll make a little screencast. Yes it’s very strange and mildly problematic...

Hi, sorry for the delay, here's a screencast demonstrating the issue:
