Anyone score to picture with Live 10?

Post by buckman » Wed Jan 08, 2020 1:19 am

Does anyone score to video with Live 10?

I am just considering how good it is for scrubbing frames and composing to picture with video?

Live is great for sound design, and I am still on 9.7.7 so wondered if there was any extra features like nudge frames etc in v10? And how much you can get done and how easy it is to score to film now directly in Live?

Pain in the ass.

I've only done 3 short films but that was almost enough for me to to purchase Nuendo just for the ability to properly score to video.

Getting video into Live was a royal pain and this was back in Live 8/9 when it was still reasonably easy with Quicktime. There is no timecode tho that could be done with maybe Max or a VST plugin but where I had pain was when I did sound design and received a re-edit of the scene that needed to be trimmed down. There was no way to easily accommodate the changes (no timecode) so all the design needed to be painstakingly shifted by hand.

I've actually declined to assist in a few projects because I found it just way too difficult and it's been 10+ years since I used Cubase/Nuendo so i'd need a few good weeks to get my head around it.

Just my experience, I love Live for most things but not for editing audio with video, it's just not designed for that really.

Doing it and also sound design/editing to picture since L8.
Sure some handy features are missing, but I know Live so well and are so comfortable with it that I prefer dealing with these rather than using another DAW.
It's absolutely doable.
And M4L is your friend

Interesting replies here.

I was thinking of possibly doing the sound design etc in Ableton then rendering out, to say another DAW, (reaper/protools?) to get frame accurate editing? as Live 10 still has nothing like this on board.

[jur] you mention that 'And M4L is your friend' - can you expand on what you mean?

I am still using Live 9.7.7 and don't currently use any Max devices, so interested as to what you use to help you in this situation? :)

I've had decent luck with video - but I've only used it for commercials, so we're talking 1 to 1.5 minutes. I didn't find it too cumbersome, and I scored and did sound design all within Abe. I mastered within Live, too.

Oh, I've done some corporate vid projects too (3-5 mins) - basic scoring and dialogue replacement, although now I tend to just score and arrange in Live and dialogue replace within Premier.

But, like I said, small projects only.

Jester, Nuendo looks absolutely awesome...but the thought of learning something else makes me want to cry.

fp.clock
Notepad
Some maths to get a frame-based grid (tempo and time resolution)
jo.CuePoints.amxd (can't find it on maxforlive.co anymore by doing a quick search but it's probably sitting somewhere on the web)
Push-ArrangeMode (not specifically video related, but my Push can't live without it)
And other goodies for things like better panning, quick resampling...

Interesting thank you.

I really must upgrade to latest Live 10, as I keep putting it off! as I know you get all the Max4Live as standard.

These scripts look good, although i don't use Push, so that one is redundant to me, but the others look good.
