Max For Live Core Library LFO "Serious Program Error" crash

Post by jbone1313 » Thu Nov 14, 2019 6:44 pm

Getting a lot of "Serious Program Error" crashes using the core library LFO.

Super frustrating.

After some googling, I see others have also experienced this.

I would assume this device should be very stable, given that it is a part of the core library.

Anyone else having this issue? Any solutions?

I'm using the bundled MFL with the latest non-beta Live 10.1.

Win 10 x64. Clean machine. Updated video card drivers, etc.

Is it a new issue for you or was it always the case?
At what point do you get the crash? When mapping? Randomly? When loading?

Not sure. I think I noticed it about six months ago, but I just started using the LFO device again this week.

I get the crash when loading the device. When I get back to my studio, I can upload the rack if needed. I already sent some crash reports.

My first suggestion would be to upgrade to the latest Live, 10.1.4. Also because there have been quite a few bug fixes implemented in the meantime.
Yes, I checked today, and I am already on the latest build. Still have the issue.

So, are you using the embedded M4l engine or did you point Live to a Max installation of your own?
Embedded.

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at this.

Yo just wanting to chime in on this as its completely destroying my workflow... 90% of my projects have something as basic as a M4L LFO and for months now I have been getting Serious Program Error crashes.

The only solution I can find is to revert to the Max for live pack I have installed from ableton 9 still (no crashes when using this). However its driving me insane still as whenever I try to open an old project it often takes me 5 attempts of re opening Ableton, as the crash occurs before the project has even finished loading.

I have am Ableton 10.1.5
Laptop: Razer Blade 15" (2019)
Processor: Intel i7-8750H
RAM: 16GB

Soundcard: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20

There's a huge issue with LFO from core library..

I've had to remove any instance of it as well as Envelope Follower from any sets I have in order to open them reliably.

Submitted upwards of 50 crash reports related to M4L issues, many coming back as generic "MaxPlug" issues with next to no information for support to make any kind of fix.

Super frustrating, started when Live 10 and Max shipped "integrated" and I stated using M4L devices.. Never had a problem with Live crashing on opening projects before Live 10.. and all I do now is avoid the M4L bus entirely whenever possible as I've been submitting reports for over a year about these issues.

I hate that this happens to anyone, but I am glad I am not alone.

Yeah, it's kind of insane. I was really hoping that, after many years of bugginess, Live 10 and MFL would be stable now that they are bundled, etc.

The fact that the LFO, in the core library, has these issues, shakes my confidence in MFL. Like, if the LFO has these issues, what about all the nifty more complicated things that we pay for? How can we trust?

This is another reason why the LFO should be a native Live device.

Sigh.

I hope this gets fixed in a way that inspires confidence.

I just installed the latest Live beta with the bundled Max version 8.1.1.

Good news. I have tried to reproduce the issue, and I cannot.

REALLY hoping this issue is fixed now.

Just adding my +1 on the new Max from the Cycling 74 website fixing my crashes after a solid weekend of trying.

Hopefully these bugs are gone for good :)

Nice. I am amazed these bugs existed for so long.

I would think a lot of people use the LFOs and stuff and would have reported it.

I have seen people complaining about these crashes on Reddit for a long time.

everything up to date and very fast machine

I've had the same issue with LFO, other devices live Color from MaxForCats etc.

The fix was to force Ableton to use the internal graphics rather than the GPU of my notebook.
I had to re-install the latest driver for the GPU (in my case NVIDIA) and use their tool to set the internal graphics for Live.

It seems to be linked to M4L devices using graphics within the device frame.

Hello all,

By using "internal graphics" for Ableton it worked for me too !

Thanks Stuartm
