its pretty lame though,
imagine being completely fine with live 8 lite, and upgrading to lite 10, just to find out you need to upgraden to a different version to keep the basic eq you were already using in 8

Welcome to the science of upselling.
Re: Why remove eq eight and spectrum from non standard ableton
Not 100% sure if this would work with Lite versions, but Live does have some backwards compatibility features for upgraded devices.
For example, presets made with the previous compressor will load that old compressor.
EQ8 got major overhauls in the last upgrades, so its basically a more high-end version of the EQ8.
If you load a Live Lite 8 project that contains EQ8, it should load the legacy EQ8 in Live Lite 10. But an old set (or maybe an old Rack Preset or Live-Clip) is the only way you could load that device.
If the old EQ8 doesn't load in Live Lite 10 but was part of a set made in Live Lite 8, I'd report it as a bug.
While Ableton doesn't have to provide compatibility from one free version to another, I think they probably had to work something out for people going from Lite 8 to Intro 10.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I dunno, do ableton really does care?
would sell my intro version and start using the others.
