All Max For Live device controls are completely unresponsive in Windows 10

Post by adelbello » Sat Aug 29, 2020 1:45 am

I'm unable to interact with any Max For Live device in Ableton installed in Windows 10. The devices play just fine and if I edit them in Max I'm able to change them, i.e. push buttons, turn dials, etc. But in Ableton itself they simply don't respond to any mouse interaction. I can't find anything online similar to this so hoping it's something simple on my end.

Some things I've tried that haven't fixed the issue:
  • Restart Ableton and computer
  • Restart with all interfaces and controllers disconnected
  • Completely uninstall and reinstall Ableton
Something interesting to note - I installed Ableton on a macbook and was able to interact with Max For Live devices just fine. Also I'm running a trial version of Ableton in case that's important. Thanks a lot for any help. I'm pretty much out of ideas.

Which Live version are you using here?
Did you try un/checking the "Pen tablet mode" in the Look/Feel Preferences?

I'm running Live 10 Trial 10.1.18 and Pen Tablet Mode is/has been unchecked. Checking it has no effect.

Right click on the device header, sc roll through the messages to find errors in red, you may find one related to a bonjour installation on windows that needs to be present for devices using MIRA to work.

I'm assuming you mean for me to select the "Open Max Window" option from the contextual menu after I right click on the device header. Unfortunately this opens up a blank max console window that doesn't seem to log anything. Also to be clear, I'm not sure what MIRA is but this problem affects all M4L devices for me. It doesn't seem to matter if it's an instrument or effect or anything.

Well darn. Since I'm still on the trial version I don't have access to support. Thanks for the help.

Yeah my drivers are pretty current. I'm running an NVIDIA 2070 Super.

Did you update Windows recently?
Can you try disabling log-in items / switching between discrete & integrated graphics?

This is nuts but it turns out I can interact with M4L devices if I move the Ableton window to a different monitor. ???

I stumbled upon the "Desktop Zoom" section of this article:
https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/artic ... on-Windows

And if I adjust the zoom level of the suspect monitor to 125% instead of 100% it also works.
So definitely a step in the right direction albeit a really weird and confusing one.
