Drum rack "variable" mapping
Drum rack "variable" mapping
Hello good people,
I've been using Ableton for some time , but never really used to perform with this tool. It's been all hardware in the clubs, but in the big picture this is really problematic and I can't Express or play everything that I want to, also carrying all the stuff and amortisation of the gear during such escapades. So I decided to digitize and leave stuff like drum machines and the keyboards at home and reduce the amount of devices I carry to a gig. Stumbled upon an idea of working around the drum tracks, check it out:
I would use a drum rack with lots of different stuff inside , simpler hits with samples and also operators etc, various fx chains on every pad. BDs, Snares, Hihats , Percs 1& 2 I guess - I would divide the whole shebang into a few separate audio tracks , with all similar sounds going into dedicated "family channels" (so I would have a master drum rack out and a few separates). I want to maintain control over my sounds , there will be different sources on different pads for various clips , but I want to have for every separate audio channel a volume fader and 3-4 parameters assigned to knobs. Here's where the problem starts. I did some research on Google and here, these forums are so vast, couldn't find anyone with same query, it may be the matter of nomenclature since English is not my first language.
So I have for example a bass drum channel on my midi controller with mute, volume fader , 3-4parameters , like I dunno pitch, decay, noise volume and dist - and that's for the bass drum 1 on some midi clip or a few clips for a piece where it is used. This might be a simpler with fx, might be synthesized, doesn't matter now. But then on another pad I have different kick with different source and fx chain, used in another group of clips, hence different parameters, like I would like some kind of bit reduction or something else apart from the pitch and decay .
Would you gals and guys advise how would I get live to work with midi controller in a way that the active kick which is being triggered in the midi clip is being controlled by those extra 3,4 knobs on the Bd channel on my controller? In a way that when I launch another clip with different drums the controller will send cc to the default "performance" parameters of another bass drum on this same channel and cc numbers, but with different chain inside the pad. Analogically with other drums of course. Also - I wonder if it's possible only for active track to receive cc so I won't start a new piece without a default state of the pad.
I guess the solution would work for the synth channel where I stack a group of ableton synths with some external modules or small synths maybe, have chains deactivate and activate on clip launch for different music pieces. I would also like to have a few knobs with synth parameters that would vary depending on the clip and the source used.
With such functionality I would have a nifty control over a few tracks ( like I said 4-5 drum tracks, a midi synth channel, a channel or two with audio loops - I will try to lock it all up in I-12 channels) and possibility to shape the sounds on the fly, only talking about track level of control at this point.
I bet this is doable, however I'm not sure how to go about it really, it has been mostly recording, keyboard, mouse and master keyboard in ableton for me now.
I bet it is a tiring read but I would be really grateful for help:) I'm sure the solution has been covered because ableton must be able to do that but I haven't been able to name my problem in a way to allow search engines to shine .
Thx in advance !
AJ

Re: Drum rack "variable" mapping
What you call simply "send/receive cc" seems to be what is usually called "MIDI assign/assignments" or "MIDI map/mapping" in software.
Live has that (like most audio software), plus "Control Surfaces" (which use scripts, usually called "Remote Scripts") with specific hardware, which are built over MIDI but use script programming to do some extra stuff.

(edit to show the link above is not a forum sig)

Re: Drum rack "variable" mapping
ClyphX Pro can do what I think you're looking to do - you can set dynamic assignments to macros so that, for example, whichever track you select, the midi controller knobs will automatically be assigned to the macros of the rack on that track. Would that help?
Re: Drum rack "variable" mapping
So you're saying I need a custom script for this ? I wondered if anyone haven't tried the same/ similar approach to drum racks and already might have a solution or a few tips on how to go about it.
Cheers
@Greenapples: just read your reply , will look into that , thx!

@keygen You're welcome, the ClyphX Pro forum may already have covered your query, they're a helpful bunch:

Will definitely check this one , this might work
