New to ableton, i need tips :)

Post by Bonbap » Sat Nov 28, 2020 3:15 pm

On this black friday i decide and bought ableton. The Ableton 11 update gets my attention and i see the future and inovation on ableton.

I am a FL Studio User, for making beats, and use Pro Tools to Mix/Master. I am already acquainted with ableton, i used sometimes on the past.
What makes me change to ableton:
- Ableton 11 inovates and its the future
- Realy good native plugins
- Max for live its fucking cool (Fl has patcher but you still lock on the fl components)
- Great to manipulate audio
- Better use of my midi controllers (was really trash on the FL)

I want tips to a new user that migrates from FL Studio, i know that i will miss the Step Sequencer and the piano roll from FL. Any tips?
Ableton Live 11
Logic Pro
Push 1
Maschine Mikro mk2

PC Specs:
Mac mini (Mid 2011) - MacOS 10.13.6
2,5 GHz Intel Core i5 (I5-2415M)
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB

Probably get started here:

https://www.ableton.com/en/live/learn-live/

If you are already kind of proficient with Live and Daws, then the best tip would be to first do the usual "spend a few months" learning the way things work, learn how to effectively use the session view to get yourself started and spend time digging into the features rather than watching YT videos.

Live's piano roll is definitely different than FL Studio. A recommended free app is the Live Enhancement Suite. It add some small FL Studio functionality to Ableton's piano roll.

That said it pays to make use of the Ableton key commands. For drum sequencing Ableton's piano roll isn't as bad as people make it to be especially when learning the key commands.

Learn the Clip Envelope editor. For Automation, Ableton is pretty nice.
