Why can't I pull up automation?

Why can't I pull up automation?

I just lifted all my stems into ableton, but it won't let me add any automation- the thin red line Im supposed to set doesn't come up when I press "a"! Does anyone know what's going on?

Do you have your computer MIDI keyboard active? If so, unclick the "keys" in the top right... I've done that a few times! Otherwise, I'm not too sure...

That would also be my first guess... and if that doesn't work, just press the Automation Mode button.
