Beginners understanding of Max for LIve

Post by chilldada » Wed Jan 20, 2021 3:47 pm

Forgive me if my question seems basic-

I've armed a midi track with a max for live instrument. It plays notes (I don't need my keyboard, its a sequencer) but, as I record it, I don't see any notes produced in the midi editor. If I route it to an audio track, that records it fine. But shouldn't any notes played by a digital instrument come through as midi notes? That's where I get confused. Do digital instruments play as either midi or audio instruments? Why can I see the midi editor and hear the instrument play but not see any notes?

Thanks for anyones help.

Your sequencer is doing it s magic AFTER the clip level, so if you need to record its midi output you have to do it on another track:
add a 2nd midi track and set your "sequencer track" as its midi input
arm this 2nd midi track
record

Thank you! Each time a challenge in Ableton appears, and then gets resolved is so satisfying! It helps the journey down the rabbit hole.
