Summing Sides to Mono?

Post by sambaji » Wed May 19, 2021 2:23 pm

I am not clear on how Utility's Mid/Side function work in mono. If I insert two adjacent utility plugins and select Side on the first one and Mono on the second, I get no signal? I thought that Mono would sum the sides together into a mono signal--make both the left and right channels the same. I don't get it?

You get no sound because your first instance, Side, is outputting an "out of phase" signal: while Left is e.g +9 (imaginary number,) Right is -9.
So when you sum these afterward with Mid, you get +9 (+) -9 ... which equals 0.

Btw, this because what Sides is doing in Utility MS mode, i.e it's outputting the differences between the L and R channels.
