Recording Got Wiped on Prior Track - Normal?

Post by nocats » Wed Mar 23, 2022 6:42 pm

I'm still learning, using a book, only half way thru it. I recorded a track in arrangement view and I see that a clip that I have looped also printed on its own track even tho I didn't arm that track, which is interesting. Then I disarmed the recorded track, which I thought I was only muting it. I then recorded another track and stopped earlier than the first recorded track. I see now something I didn't expect. The first recorded track data has been wiped up to the point of where I stopped earlier recording the second track. I didn't have the first track armed, I was kind of assuming that the data would still be there since I thought that I was only muting that track.

So I'm sitting here wondering if maybe I know nothing at all how Live works; like I'm missing some major point of the the whole thing; like it's not a multitrack DAW at all; I guess I'm in a bit of shock like my basic understanding is totally false. I'll try to add an image.

Ooooof, that's a tricky one.

It is possible to arm multiple tracks at once (this can be found in the preferences), so maybe when you armed the second track the first track also remained armed (and yup, usually arming another track will automatically disarm the previously armed track).

Or, there could be something funky going on with audio routing. A screenshot certainly might help, mate.

Seems I can't upload an image, so I tried this site that I haven't ever used or heard of before. Seems ok at the moment.

Having just learned about the file manager, nice feature, I figured I might be able to recover the lost performance midi data. I found the files for the tracks but in the first image, it merely contained the track with the missing data. So I used undo a few times and was able to recover the data that was wiped by the additional recording as seen in the second image.

It's nice to know recovery is possible but I still don't understand what I did to cause the problem so I guess I'll experiment more with it. Next test will be not disabling any existing tracks to mute, but fading it all the way down to mute, and then recording new track. I'll have to keep in mind that when recording with arrangement record button, any non-activated track gets erased! How is this a feature? :!: :?:

New question. Has anyone ever seen this? I just tried to re-create the issue and it didn't repeat. So maybe since I'm using old hardware, it was a one-time anomaly. It's also 2:30am and I'm weary so I'll look again tomorrow. I'll also repeat it on a later model machine with Live 11. I have 10 on an old macbook that I'm only using for learning and cluttering up the storage with all sorts of test files. I also like the retro look of it, for now. Hope to have an update on this tomorrow.

My hope is that I might be unable to re-create the issue and move on to the final 200 pages of the book and start producing, streaming, being productive....
