Arrangement View takes over Export Length

Post by NeonBlackCat » Mon Oct 10, 2022 11:19 am

Hej folks, I have a weird one

My arrangement view takes over the export length when I just want to do a quick export from a session view clip (like as an MP3 for showing someone stuff). So whatever was selected previously there, if I go back to session view, select my clip like normally (in this case shown a 17 bars long example) it won't register the selected length anymore. ONLY if I delete the midi/audio in arrangement view, I can go back to session view and have the normal behaviour of selecting a clip and its length will automatically be the set export lenght

anyone knows why and how make Ableton behave normal again?

cheers,

THAT was a quick one and another headache Ableton has given me:

solved it with another friend:

whenever you have ANYTHING in the arrangement view, the export dialogue bugs out on you and doesn't behave normally again, UNLESS you select the SCENE

solo'ing the track doesn't help
deactivating anything else does not
rearranging the loop length of the clip doesn't either
deleting anything that was in arrangement as well

Manual doesn't say anything about this!

sigh

Interesting! I'll pass this to the doc team.

I picked up a handy tip somewhere on here that works well for this scenario.

Insert a MIDI track at the top of the Arrangement View, double-click to create a MIDI clip on this track and resize this clip to the length you want to render / export (also, allign to the start of your for-export arrangement).

Now, when you want to render / export, select this clip and all shall be good to go.

Bonus points if you name the track / clip something relevant, like "Export Track Length" and save as part of your template or default set. Obviously you need to adjust the MIDI clip to reflect what you wish to export, but make this part of your workflow and it'll become second nature soon enough.

This is all good and a tip I picked up from Andrew Huang's vid on Ableton Tricks.

HOWEVER!

This is only relevant to the arrangement view, not for session view clips and exporting audio from there.
Because only through the export dialogue you can change fileformat and lenght. Say you've recorded a bit into a clip, but only want to use a portion of it, like the best bass lick. Then you select the loop lenght of the clip in session view and have that exported. This is where the manual lacks information, as well as that arrangement view blocks simple exporting from clips if anything is/was present there.
Because now you have to have to select a scene first before you can export your selected clip-loop out of session view!
