Cut 20Hz on the Master channel?

Post by Christian_R » Sun Mar 26, 2023 1:44 pm

Hi!

I just saw this video, where he recommended cutting below 20Hz. Is this the normal way to do it for EDM music?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvJ5O5n4ksE

I also installed Voxengo SPAN and checked a new song by Deadmau5 and Kaskade, and it looks like there not much going on below 20Hz there either.

So is i it a good thing to cut below 20Hz at the master?

I just recently started to learn about mixing, so maybe this is something most people know already. But I'm happy to get some feedback on this, and how to mix good in general :)

What I'm wondering is: what kind of speakers actually output 20Hz??
And who can still hear 20Hz audio (or lower, unless you're an elephant) at age 18?
My opinion is most speakers usually only start outputting audible audio at around 50Hz.

But I've learned these tricks though: it's good to cut (almost) everything below 50-100ishHz, and to make sure your kick and bass don't mess with each other's frequencies.

Another tip: to make your kick or snare sound "snappy", duplicate it with a closed hi-hat sound instead of messing with an eq plugin for 2 hours. The hi-hat will need eq'ing though.
