11.3.2 Crashes on Windows while loading

Post by MichaelAbletonForum » Wed May 24, 2023 11:57 am

I have a lot of project all crashes a the beginning of loading. I think it's any of my plugins. I've switched to only VST3 to have a clear setup but still the same.

We need readable crashes reports so that we can find the reason by ourself. Its always the same invest 3-4 Days to find the bad Plug in.

The basic method: Remove plugins from the vst folder (copy to temp) -> Load -> check if it loads -> and so on

I do it always in the half / half way. It safes a lot of time. Means: Remove the half of the plugins, then check. now you now in which half the bad plugin is. Then the next half of the bad ones. Theoretically after 3-4 rounds it would be clear what it is.

Ohhh, one additional info that can help.

If you do the cross check, copy the bad plugin back to the plugin folder. The first time its works, but the plugin is stated as missing. If you load the second time then it crashes. That could be a little bit confusing.

I my case I'd removed the dune plugin, then for validation i copied it back, and it loads. The second time it crashes as expected. I think this behavior is related to the plugin scanning.

If you are working on windows with bigger projects closing a project needs also a lot of time. You can use:

taskkill /IM "Ableton Live 11 Suite.exe" /F

in a KillLive.bat file.

I use this also in live situations to kill the current instance and load the next. This always triggers the crash message, and you have to save first, but for "bad plugin searching" or "loading the next live set", thats ok.

I've had the same crash issue on MacOS with this latest 11.3.2 update. Almost every project - and my default set all cause a crash. I don't have time right now to diagnose which plugin is implicated so I reverted back to 11.2.11.

Psyscope Pro has an update in case anyone was crashing with that like I was on 11.3.2. What a great plugin!

Yup, I needed to update Dune too. Lastest version of Heat Up 3 vst3 is also crashing (Live 11.3.4. ) I just sent developer an email.

FYI, the way I figure out the culprits is to first load groups one by one from the crashing project using Live's browser. Once I determine the group, I start trying each track until I get the once that crashes things. If you're lucky, you'll be able to see the offending plugin before the crash. If not, you have to search through the project file. Ableton project files are really just zipped XML files, so change extension to .zip and unzip it. The XML is massive but you can usually figure it out by searching for group and track names.
