CPU clock speed vs CPU cache

Post by sprk_nl » Sun Jul 30, 2023 10:45 am

I've been reading up on AMD's CPU's and specifically their 3D-cache feature.
My gut feeling says, with focus on the same budget:
More cores can handle more tracks / work better with Ableton.
I doubt if the additional cache decreases music/rendering computation.

Question: Does anyone have experience or information/sources about cache vs cores with Ableton?

Comparing first in the Ryzen 7 section the 7800X3D with 7700X, this means:
- Both have 8 cores
- Decreased clock speed -> 5Ghz | 5.4Ghz
- Increased L3 cache -> 96MB | 32 MB
- Increased TDP -> 105W | 120W
- Increased cost ~ 150,- Euro's

For even less of the cost increment between the 7700X and 7800X3D, the following CPU's become in budget as well:
- Ryzen 9 7900 12 cores 3,7GHZ - 5,4GHZ @ 65W
- Ryzen 9 Pro 7945 12 cores 3,7GHZ - 5,4GHZ @ 65W
- Ryzen 9 7900X 12 cores 4,7GHZ - 5,6GHZ @ 170W

The information I found in summary:
Lots of information is there about gaming. Games improve from more L3 Cache, not so much from more cores.
Rendering calculations don't improve with cache.
