Push 3 : how to display "momentary" controls ?

Post by chapelier fou » Thu Aug 31, 2023 10:11 am

Sorry if it's a dumb question but since we only have knobs as controls, how do you deal with "trigger" actions.
Like a "commit" button ?
The only way I found is to use, i.g. a live.button with automation on and off set to the same name, and attach a delay and a "set 0" message going back to itself. Result is king of weird and ugly on the Push.
Is there a way to use one of the push buttons below the knobs, or get the "touch" info of a knob ?

Hope I'm clear !

I'm using the same workaround.

You should be able to get the "touch" of a knob (can't remember from the top of my head but you should easily find it in the LOM), and you should be able to use any button. The problem is that, currently there's no way to observe a control's value WITHOUT first grabbing it (and thus deactivating it)... which is a bug (and is filled).

Well, today's L11.3.20b1 update fixed the grab/observe control issue. So you should now be able to observe any control without grabbing it.
Update your P3 to v1.1.2b1 and you should now be good to go (I made a few tests and the fix does work).

As a side question/thought :
What's also annoying in this type of non-ergonomic controls, it's that it also fills two entries in the undo history.

To give you an example of a simple patch I've been doing for someone yesterday :
the guy/girl wanted a way to delete notes in the selected clip from Push.
So in the end, I've made a device that shows a weird "delete" button to toggles quickly between two "delete" symbols when you turn the know clockwise. Bizarre esthetics and ergonomy. In addition, you have to undo twice to undo the action.

Most of it applies to any controller, btw, it's not just Push.

Why not grabbing momentarily and using Push's Delete button?
Or doing something like Shift+Delete? So you observe Shift, and when it's pressed you grab the Delete button, make it fo what it needs to do, and as soon as you release the Shift button, Delete goes back to native behaviour.

But yeah, overall, this is an old annoying M4L thing.

Btw, on P3 you can already select notes with the jogwheel and hit Delete. You can also delete them from the sequencers layouts etc...
So I'm not sure why you'd need to implement this in M4L.
Am I missing something?

Well, there's situations where it would have more dramatic consequences :P
