Ableton 11 Slow on Mac M2 Sonoma

Post by Colin Tyler » Wed Nov 08, 2023 2:34 am

I'm running a brand new Mac Studio M2 with Sonoma 14.1. Ableton 11.3.13's user interface is extremely laggy. Pretty much un-usable. I installed Ableton's 11.3.2 Beta and it is the same issue. The only other thing I can think of is to install an older OS. I've contacted customer support with no reply. The Facebook User Group is not "approving" my post. Help!!

Support can take a few days to reply to you, so hang in there and they’ll get back to you.

Huh? According to Ableton’s knowledge base it is compatible: Apple and macOS compatibility with Live.

No worries. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there are bits of the Ableton website that haven’t been updated recently.

It's unusable on my brand New M2 Mac Studio too (and BTW I am on Ventura at the moment). Sent detailed support request to Ableton but they are not answering. It seems (not least from this forum) that this is a big issue and has been for a fairly long time. Is there really no solutions to this. If Ableton won't address it (or answer support requests) what is one supposed to do. I could go back to Live 10 - but would loose all the work I had started in 11. I feel that they should reimburse the upgrade fee they charged me for 11. Super frustrated!

Unstable how? I have the Mac M2 Studio and Live is fine there. There are some plugins that are lagging on Ventura and Sonoma support that I use all the time, that spike and make Live unstable, but that's not on Ableton.

I’m using it without any issues on my Mac Studio M2 so it must be something specific to your setup and or plugin collection

I'm having exact same problem also with Sonoma 14.2. Simple things like clicking on Audio Effects takes at least 30 seconds --it's almost as if there is a background operation eating up all the processing power.

I'm running the latest Live 11.3.13 version on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro with the latest Sonoma 14.2 (beta) version. No Issues at all - clicking on Audio Effects is instantaneously

Also running same Live version on the latest Sonoma 14.1 on my Mac Studio M2 Max - also no issues

Hello folks,
I bought an M3 Max 3 days ago for a lot of money, updated it to 14.2 Sonoma (I am new to MacOS) and have massive problems with Ableton Live 11.3.13 (also 10 and 11.1.6) with my Thunderbolt interface (Quantum 2626). I have done a lot of research and am very confused. Even my Windows computer is more powerful. I'm currently trying to downgrade to Ventura.

I read here that not everyone with similar specs has these problems.

Any tips on what I can do to get Live up and running? I would hate to send the MacBook back.

Best regards from Germany

No problem here on a M1 Pro running Live 11 and Sonoma 14.1.2.
I have some CPU spikes issues with some NI plugins and some PA plugins, but the whole rest (around 400 plugins) is ok…

I did read some people have global audio issues with Sonoma 14.2 though…

Could you downgrade to 14.1.2 ?
Did you test some specific plugins ? Or is it glitchy with an empty Live session ?
Definitely, it’s not to be expected…

Could you please share what type of problems? Please also share the audio buffer size you’re using…
