Live 12 is coming !

Post by chapelier fou » Tue Nov 14, 2023 1:38 pm

Couldn't resist opening this topic.
Some really exciting thing in this release, isn't it ?
To me, the highlights are :

- new modulators
- tab view editor, devices, etc...
- mixer in arrangement
- Roar and Meld (especially Roar)
- probability groups

What are your thoughts ?

Yeah it looks great. Can't wait to try it out.

It'll be interesting to see how the new stuff carries over to Push 3 (although apparently it will be limited).

IMO, they really didn't listen to the users. Everyone is eager to get support for ARA, not to mention the ability to freeze groups or dynamic EQ/linear phase EQ. There's no "bounce audio in place" or other vocal tuning tools.

This update was supposed to be 11.5.

Thank you, Ableton, for 10 amazing years. I'm going back to Cubase.

Congrats to everyone who worked on this, there are some interesting things in there. Some totally bananas things too, I've never really had a desperation for scalar support and whenever people requested itit I'd say"but how would they even do that?" So, it's pretty hilarious to see it integrated so deeply. I look forward to everyone going full Aphex Twin.

Also, I'm never usually excited by the "new instrument" which arrives with a new Live version, but this new one looks more flexible and weird than most of the usual synths around. Great for those hard to reach tones.

Also ... my commiserations to people new to Live. I was just watching the SonicState intro demo for L12 and I realised how complicated it all must seem to a new user. I'm glad I only have to learn the new "top layer" of stuff!

Looks interesting. But whether it's 179GBP of interesting I'm not so sure.

Based on previous versions when do you think the beta for V12 will be made available? Also will V12 beta be made available to all V11 users or just those with a pre-booked upgrade?

Historically the beta has opened up to users in waves, to make it easier to track and log issues. But usually by the end of the process it’s open to anyone that wants to try it. You can sign up here:

After watching two videos now about the new features I must say, this looks like an update I was waiting for. Although only some things from my wishlist will be implemented.

But I did not know that I was waiting for many of the promising new features and how good they seem to be implemented. Live 12 now really seems to focus on the what I like Live for, especially for electronic music. Providing easy and fun to use creative tools to create sequences, beats, arpeggios and chord progressions. The ways to manipulate MIDI data with the diverse new MIDI tools in the piano roll is impressive. But also the UI changes, the new synth, browser and many little workflow changes look very good for me.

I always go for the pre-order. It's pointless to wait on the purchase part. It's sensible to wait on using L12 as your main DAW ... but why wait on the purchase? I just get the discount and sit on my hands until everyone says the release is mostly stable. I usually switch from the older version about 3 or 4 months after release. Otherwise I know I'll have to buy it at full price and part way through the release cycle.

Preorder for me is £143 GBP. because of the discount.

Devils advocate: Reasons it's NOT worth paying for the preorder:
You are never going to get L12.
You want to wait and pay full price.
You want to only get half a release cycle for your money

I was personally really expecting ARA, or fixes to the tempo automation regarding Melodyne. It's crucial for some of us who work a lot with vocals and live shows.

What I'm actually kind of excited for is the MIDI editing capability. As someone that has tried a little bit of other DAWs, I've found that even though the Live Piano Roll isn't bad, it could definitely have it's improvements. I think this update is a step in the right direction.

I'm not very interested in the scale grid thing, tbh. It's probably taylored towards people that haven't taken time to study music in general. Cool, but meh.

Roar seems to be a nice addition in my opinion

The "new packs" don't seem to cut it for a payed update to me.

I'm on the fence, but i'm not completely sold.

Hmm, the url has L12 in it, but I sign in and it takes me to the project home which is Live 11.

Is 12 going to populate into there, or do people need to opt out and back in or something? Thanks

Is there any change to how fonts are handled - as in, not just Zoom… but font size options??

I don't think the public beta Centercode forum for Live 12 is up yet.
