The move from Live 11 to 12

Post by humpo72 » Tue Dec 05, 2023 10:04 pm

Having moved to Ableton Live during the life of live 11, I have never gone through an upgrade. A few questions regarding the upgrade to Live 12. Is it a new install or an update to the existing live 11 installation? If a new install, can I still use my packs content & user library which is on an external drive? im guessing for the packs, it will just rescan the location I have them if I re-point it in settings.. for the user library is it advisable to start fresh & copy stuff about? so many questions running around in my head lol.

It’s a new install that sits quite happily alongside Live 11. 12 inherits all of 11’s libraries and file-paths automatically. You might have to manually set one or two minor settings in Live 12’s preferences to match your 11 settings, but never anything major like sound libraries etc.

In the new browser, all your custom Packs, Places and Favorites carry straight over, just the same as they were in 11. They’ll all inherit the same paths 11 was expecting to see.

That’s been my experience through many Ableton updates. Hope this helps!

This might be a stupid question, but once 12 is installed, should I uninstall 11 or do you need both? I am also new to Ableton so just want to check, apologies if this is a stupid question :P

not a stupid question at all--you can keep both installed simultaneously. in fact, you probably should for a while, until you're comfortable working in 12 and know that any v11 projects you want to move to v12 are working properly. once you're good, you can remove Live 11 if you like. have fun!
