External Instrument via LaunchKey MIDI-out

Post by yvesk » Sat Dec 30, 2023 5:28 pm

Hey Ableton friends, I'm still exploring everything, and right now I'm a bit stuck.

I use Ableton Live 11 Standard in combination with a Novation LaunchKey 49 connected via the MIDI-out to a Commodore 64 (with dual-SID).

On the LaunchKey I have configured a custom mode that allows me to control my C64 via MIDI, and that works perfectly.

As a next step, I now want to play a clip via MIDI from Ableton. To do this, I use an "external instrument" in Ableton Live and set the "MIDI To" to the MIDI-out of my Launchkey. However, this does not give any sound on my C64. It's as if there's no "pass-through" of my MIDI commands via the LaunchKey.

Any suggestion on what I might be doing wrong here?

As a reference, this is basically what I did in Ableton Live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ONL4ZWgy7E
