Simpler--Changes the sound dramatically--normal?
I've been investigating this a little more and what I found was not that Simpler or Impulse were changing the sound, but the preview browser was which is not what I thought originally.
I realized this after loading a sound that sounded different in the preview browser and simpler. I loaded that sound into Battery, and it still sounded different than the preview browser, but basically the same as Simpler.
Then I compared a preview of that sound in Audiofinder (a sound preview app) and Live's preview bropwser. The preview in Audiofinder sounded the same as in Simpler and Battery.
So, what the preview browser is doing is cutting off or fading in the first 4 ms or so of sound. To replicate what the preview browser was doing I turned tha attack up on my simpler to about 4ms. Now the sound sounded pretty close to the preview browser.
With sounds that don't have a transient right away its not noticeable. With sounds that do, sometimes the preview sounds better than Simpler, sometimes worse, depending on the sound.
This has nothing to do with warp settings as mine are turned off.

sorry, but i can't resist: i love all these things where people think live is degrading their sound somehow, and it turns about to be some somewhat hidden default option that's the culprit. you would think people would look for these types of default setting to mess with before claiming that (e.g.) live or simpler or impulse distort the sound of samples.
Granted in many cases what you say is the truth--user error results in something not sounding right.dj superflat wrote:sorry, but i can't resist: i love all these things where people think live is degrading their sound somehow, and it turns about to be some somewhat hidden default option that's the culprit. you would think people would look for these types of default setting to mess with before claiming that (e.g.) live or simpler or impulse distort the sound of samples.
However in this case I dont think that is so.
If you have an idea as to what default setting is on please advise me as I've turned warp settings off. I don't know what other setting could be causing this.
Note--I have 7 beta and I THINK this problem has been resolved in 7. Preview and Simpler seem to sound the same. I have to test further with more sounds to be sure though.

I know when I first started, I didnt realise that i needed to lengthen the amp decay to full which it isnt by default. Often by shortening the kick, all the bass was removed and I didnt know why.
Also i think the filter is on by default with the resonance turned up, which will add a certain brightness in the high frequencies...

Re: Simpler--Changes the sound dramatically--normal?
This is still a thing. What I expect from Simpler is that it simply plays back a sample when it does actually change a lot of qualities of the playback. If not the Sampler, this is at least what i expect from the Simpler. Even when turning off filters, warp, LFO, and fades.
What is strange to me is that when I load the same sample into a Drum Rack it plays back the sample as expected, but doesn't the drum rack by default also use a Sampler to play back it's samples?

Set your default Simpler using the one that you like in the drum rack. Yes, a drum rack uses Simpler by default. Making those changes that you mention, and also setting the output to unity (0db), should get some way to "zeroing out" a Simpler to the point where a sample plays back the same way it does in the browser.ChromoSone wrote: ↑Sun Dec 31, 2023 11:56 amThis is still a thing. This pointed me in the right direction to fix this. Thank you!
I found here how to actually change the default: viewtopic.php?t=117826
This does, however, not change the default of when dragging a simpler onto a track. But it does change the default of when dragging samples onto the device detail viewer or your drumrack. Oddly enough, my drumrack actually used to implement a Sampler(rather than a simpler) by default when dropping a sample on it. What I find weird is that you have to make a default patch yourself that actually plays back your sample unaltered, but I'll stop complaining now.
