Preset Morphing for any live device - VST or otherwise.

Post by e-theory » Thu Sep 20, 2007 3:20 am

Imagine if you could save all of the current values of a device ( be it a VST or a native Live device ) and store them in a preset in the Library ( Or maybe a clip of some type.... ). At the very least this feature is cool as you can't currently store presets unless you put devices into a rack and save a preset for the whole rack - which works but is not ideal.

Currently people are doing similar things by using clips - i.e. automating a large number of values by hand to allow you to apply a large number of controller changes at once, by playing a different clip, which is functional but tedious.

Imagine being able to "snapshot" all of these values into a preset, and then being able to create a device like a "Preset Morpher" that you can insert before any device, that feeds it with preset values.

All you need to do then is drop these presets from the Library into the "Preset Morpher" and it will keep a little list of presets that you have dropped into it that you can add to and remove from.

You could then define morphs from one preset to another, using various methods ( think crossfader, random, mapped to received midi note etc. ), and the "Preset Morpher" would then calculate the new values and feed them forward to whatever device it was sitting in front of.

I have wanted something like this for years, but after buying Minimonsta and seeing real-time preset morphing implemented for real in such an impressive and immediately useable way, my thirst for such a thing has been rekindled.

Comon people, surely such a feature would be incredibly useful?

Waddaya reckon?

No-one thinks this is a good idea?

How about I put it in a simpler way.

I think that all Live devices should have a presets bank that is controllable via MIDI bank change.

In this way you could send data from a MIDI clip to change the preset used by a Live device in the same way you could for any other VST device supporting MIDI bank change data.

Also, going further, there should be some way to morph between preset values at a user defined speed or order or random etc.

Sounds like a good idea. Especially at least having the possibility to do bank changes.

A preset morpher would be nice too, and I'm sure it's not too hard to implement. It's simply a matter of interpolating between the values of a first preset and those of another... This way you can create killer transitions in a pretty simply manner.

+1!
very good suggestion.
Preset recall and morphing with midi would be very nice with racks (or normal plug-ins, if this is possible). Maybe 8 presets would be enough, like with kore 2, which is a lot of fun now.

I do that all the time - saving presets to the library without having to wrap them in a rack. Guess it's because I'm using Audio Units, which work just like Live's internal devices in that respect.
I'd think if the VST SDK offered that possibility, Ableton would have done it already. But wait... KORE can do it with VSTs, too.

Hello,

old post
But I just made this free device for VSTs. It will be possible in next version to do the same with not only VST but any other devices.
Since the anounce of L12, I cannot wait to adjust this device with the new live.modulate and the new variation device...

Still beta. Feel free to tell me for bugs/suggestions.

Seem to work with L12 (tested with L10 and L11) (Hey Ableton!, invite me to L12 beta test =)

Cheers
