Search clips by name

Post by jimmynitcher » Fri May 23, 2014 11:09 am

Sets with large amounts of clips - can't find them quick enough, surely this is a common problem amongst DJ's?

Something like Alfred on the mac would be nice - a hotkey that you type the first couple of letters.

yeah, that would be a cool feature.

I guess as a workaround, you could organize your sets alphabetically and then assign key maps to quick-toggle focus to the track where songs that start with that corresponding letter are located. Would only get you the first letter, but it's something at least?

Good idea but a lot of work - I'm lazy!

I made a MFL device for a friend of mine DJing with sessions up to 1000 scenes to look for scene names using a keyword and select the first one appearing.

Ah thats a step in the right direction, it looks great - don't suppose you have time to extend it to clips? I think it would be very popular!

Thanks

Has anybody tried this stuff: http://www.az-labs.com/downloads/search-clip-name/

There is not much info, but it seems that it does exactly what the people in this thread are searching for. 9 EUR seems high (since there is so much free stuff on maxforlive.com) but fair if it does what it says (and performs well even with a set of 1000+ clips). But before I buy, I'd like to know if anybody else can verify that it works well (don't want that it crashes while I'm gigging).

Thanks

Yes, please. This would also be good for tracks and devices.

Let's say I want to edit a synth's eq, but I don't remember which track it's on - then I could just enter "operator", and have a list of the various Operator instances in my project. A double-click would take me directly to the track it's on.

This could be part of the browser search (ctrl+f). Along with clip search, big projects would be a lot easier to manage.

So, couldn't wait for somebody's feedback and just went ahead and bought it, because I desperately need that shit.

I've tested it with my standard set of roughly 1200 clips and here are my first impressions:
- I've got a personal e-mail from the developer to thank me for the purchase and he showed interest in understanding how I will be using the patch and how he could improve it. Very nice.
- The initialization took a couple of seconds because it indexed all my 1200 clips.
- Once initialized, the search itself was super-fast (this was my biggest worry, that I would get CPU spikes or freezes whenever I wanted to search something during a gig). Works like a charm.
- No crashes or other issues so far (will use it during my next gig this weekend)
- The search itself has some nice features:
* I can search for terms that appear anywhere in the clip-name (this is perfect for me since I encode BPM information and pitch information in the clip-name "Trackname 120 BPM F#" and can then just search for 120 BPM)
* Results are shown while I type (I don't have to press Enter)

Something I've immediately missed: I wished I could trigger the clip right from the search screen (hope they will listen and add this to the device)

So, all in all totally worth the money (although I wonder why Ableton doesn't implement this kind of super-basic feature into the software itself). I hope I can say that even after the weekend... :-)

@Idonotlikebroccoli: I understand your use-case but I hope they don't bloat this simple patch with this kind of additional functionality (but rather make a separate one), because looking for instruments / FX is not something I would do at all during a gig (all the stuff I need is mapped to my Launchcontrol + Launchpad).
