Looking for a bit of wisdom about opening / saving older sets

Post by otalgia99 » Fri Mar 08, 2024 7:52 pm

Hello everyone

Now that L-12 is with us, I am interested to know how other users approach the question of living with sets from previous versions of Live.

I can't quite decide whether to just "save over" when opening L-11 sets in 12 and permanently committing them to the new environment, or if there is some generally-held wisdom which holds that it is best to save-as instead (thereby bulking up the storage space... but then, storage isn't as impossibly expensive at was once upon a time).

It certainly seems safest to "save as" but is it really necessary? My own general tendency appears to be that the more accustomed I get to using each successive new version of Live, the rarer the occasions I use a previous version to do any work.

That said though, the transitional periods do make a person wary....

If you “Save As….“ a L12 project without doing a Collect All and Save, you won’t duplicate all the audio files in a set, you’ll just create a new, L12 .als file that hardly takes up any space.

Thanks for weighing in!

I understand that; the question becoming one of organization I suppose, and best- (or maybe just "most clever"-) practice.

I reckon I could open the existing set in 11, append "L11" to the set name, then open the first one again in 12 and just hit save....

I believe I begin to understand whereof you speak....

For example, sets that rely upon instances of presets from packs upgraded for 12 are now committed to 12 (if I want to keep using those presets, of course).

Fly, little bird, fly....
