Live 12 and old Live 11 Library

Post by Pasha » Tue Mar 05, 2024 9:51 pm

I have duplicated the Live 11 Library (suite) before installing Live 12.
After installation Live 12 took possession of Live 11 Library folders showing some 'core library updates'.
Is the old Live 11 Library still usable with Live 11 at the same time or better to have distinct Libraries?
(That will release some space on my Library drive)
Thanks

The old library is furthermore usable. But it makes sense to store various libraries in a different place.

The Core Library is part of the application package, i.e it's not shared between you Live builds.
For the rest, it's up to you to make separate libraries or not.

Thanks!
My additional concern is about update-able packages. I am afraid if I update the packages (Session Drums, Sampled Instruments or M4L packages) they won't be shared anymore. Let me know.

Cheers

Correct - if you update to the Live 12 versions of the packs then you won't be able to use at least some of the content of those packs in Live 11 if you're switching between the two.

Therefore it's recommended to set a different Pack installation location for your Live 11 library and then you can switch between 11 and 12 with no issues. Preferences -> Library

I am trying to do this as well, but I seem to have problems with the

C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Local\Ableton\Live Database

I have everything set to

C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Ableton 11\Live Database

but it keeps creating the Ableton folder for the live database.

While I have in the configuration everything set to Ableton 11.
so can you get around that? or will 11 and 12 use the same folder and re-use the live database?

Live 11 and 12 can indeed share the same database so they should remain the default location.

You can set different locations just for the Packs installation folder though, in Preferences → Library

Live 11 and 12 don't share the same database. They are separate database files, so there is no need to move them to another location.

Ah! Good to know. I guess the Database is what is built when Places icon 'runs'.
But what about Max appliances ? Can I fall into a Max version compatibility nightmare?

Thanks a lot.
