Does ALT + E shortcut to split MIDI notes on piano roll work on your PC?

Post by johnny.lizard » Sun Mar 10, 2024 9:12 pm

I already wrote to the support for that issue. I'm reporting it here too to know if it affects anyone else.

Did you know in Ableton 12 on Windows systems you can split the notes simply with ALT + E and dragging up and down with the mouse? Well, it doesn't work to me. It seems ignoring the "E" key and simply changes my velocity as I pressed only ALT.

It's ctrl-e, you need to hold it then use the up/down arrow to set the number of splits.

This is about the fourth time I've seen this same problem, it seems like there's a typo in the manual or the script of one of their videos.

I'm on Mac so can't confirm for sure, but I've given this same suggestion on the basis that it's cmd-e on Mac to others on PC who've said it works for them.

CTRL + E works fine also using the arrow keys but in the manual and in the videos they talk about ALT + E splitting the notes dragging up or down with the mouse.

The video is wrong at that point. ALT+E opens the menu on Windows.

The shortcut for Windows is E+CTRL.
Not to be mistaken by CTRL+E that slices to the grid.
So the order in which you press the keys is important.

I'm starting to see why there was another thread about these shortcuts being confusing.

Although just fwiw the method of holding down cmd-e and then using the up and down arrow to select the number of spilts just divides the note evenly into the selected number of parts and ignores the grid. It's only when you hit cmd-e and release that it splits to the selected grid. Not sure about windows, but it seems like from replies I've gotten elsewhere that it's the same.

That one pretty much does everything I want from this feature, so personally I'm going to try to forget that these other functions/shortcuts even exist ... combined keyboard and mouse shortcuts especially give me a headache.

You can do the same thing in Windows as in MacOS.
The main point is that ALT shortcuts cannot be used on Windows
.
Since CTRL+E was already used, Ableton chose E+CTRL for what is ALT+E on MacOS.
Unfortunately, they mentioned the wrong shortcut in the video, leading to all the confusion.
Adding to the confusion is the fact that it's not clear that E+CTRL and CTRL+E do different things.

Let's hope Ableton adjusts the info text and doesn't make the same mistake in the manual.

I couldn't figure out why holding E+Ctrl on Windows was shown in videos, but it didn't work for me.

It was because I had the computer MIDI keyboard option turned on, holding E does nothing in that case.

Alternatively Shift+E is a fine method of splitting notes and works the same regardless of computer MIDI keyboard on or off.
