Record Automation with midi controller

So I linked a knob to a cutoff filter to record automation all is fine but its greyed out.. I clicked the re-enable automation button but it keeps disabling the automation clip. Because I believe the midi knob has been turned to a different position.

The only way I see is to play back the recorded automation is to delete the connection to the midi knob. This is quite weird.
What am I not doing to make sure this all works. Do I have to remove the midi connection to the cutoff filter (or what ever) every time. Any insight would be great.
