Beatstep (non pro) dynamic MIDI mapping

Post by subduct » Mon Apr 22, 2024 4:09 pm

I have a regular beatstep and have checked out these various tools:
https://blog.abletondrummer.com/advance ... eton-live/
http://pikub.free.fr
https://raphaelquast.github.io/beatstep/

I'd like to build something personalised for my beatstep, but have no programming experience and very little M4L.
I think I need dynamic mapping as I want assignments to snap to selected track? I'd start with maybe 3 maps like the basic, mix & launch pages from beatstepQ. If I could play in drum hits & midi notes, tweak device parameters, do basic mix down and launch clips & scenes I'd be happy. Also a way of switching between these maps on the beatstep. Things like browsing, creating/editing clips, everything else I'm happy doing with trackpad and keyboard.

Looking for suggestions for path of least resistance to achieving this:
- can it be done within Ableton's midi mapping features
- is it possible to edit the beatstepQ work on GitHub to strip out what I don't want (for a non-programmer I mean!). There's a long thread https://github.com/raphaelquast/beatstep/issues/58 about problems with beatstepQ working on macOS.
- will the above abletondrummer tool get me there

I know lots of other controllers do this stuff natively but beatstep is absolutely what I want to stick with for portability reasons.

There are premade universal options out there.

Two which come to mind are:
-selectedtrackcontrol
-midi remote script
It’s at least worth looking at these to understand what kinda works, and how to get it working
