Is 75% the normal maximum usable cpu amount in live 5?

Post by glitchrock-buddha » Sat Oct 15, 2005 1:22 am

I posted a couple issues here http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28167 , but didn't get replies, so i thought i'd shorten it.

On my powerbook, everything gets way too choppy, crackly and slow after about 75% cpu. To Mac users: IS THIS NORMAL? I would think i could use it up to 100%, but with slowed down graphics etc.

And does rewire actually work for anyone with logic pro? Won't sync loops proper here.

I'm new to live, so i just want to know what's normal (broken) and what may be specific to my setup. thanks...

What is your buffer size? By increasing your buffer, you may be able to go above 75% without crackling.

hey thanks for the answer. i posted my buffer sizes in my other (longer post). I guess you didn't see that, but i've got them set at 512. Plug-in set to 'as audio'. This should be enough no?

And keep in mind this is without actually using any audio loops, only plug-ins, where the whole thing gets useless aronund 75%. That's kinda weak.

unfortunately, the cpu usage is sort of a lie. 70-75% is the maximum you'll get without audio drop outs...on a powerbook at least. i've been using live since 1.5 and have always had this problem, upping the buffer will help, but not that much.

thanks for the clarification. I see you're running OS 10.4.2. Do you find that helps at all with live 5's performance? I'm still on 10.3.9?

And btw, do you successfully use rewire?

cheers,

the os upgrade makes no difference as far as i can tell. and yeah i use rewire...both for revision and reason with no problems.

If lives meters say 75%, then usually my actual CPU use (as reported by the OS) is about 99%. This could just be a windows thing, not sure if its the same on Maccers.

I had the same problem on a intel 2.8 processor couple of months ago.

Now i'm on dualcore amd 64 processor and i can go at 85% without any audio drop out or undesirable glitch.

its pretty cool
