Ableton Link -Tap Tempo in Photon 2

Post by Trent Crawford » Mon Nov 04, 2024 12:44 am

Hey All!

Long time Ableton user. This question relates to a new setup where I’m using an iPad to control DMX lights - Photon 2 is the app.

Not using a Mac / Ableton for this particular setup.

The app doesn’t allow Tap Tempo to be midi mapped. But it does have Ableton Link.

I’m wondering if there’s any works arounds in an iPad only with a midi foot controller that will allow me to tap tempo on the fly.

Anyone smarter than me know if there is a 3rd party app that can make this so?

I was thinking perhaps there is an app that will accept tap tempo from a midi device, that can then link to Photon 2 / control Photon 2 tempo via Ableton Link.

Cheers
Trent

There are a lot of link enabled apps. Not all of them have tap tempo of course. And less of those have it midi mappable.

I’m sure there might be a few free options out there but none come immediately to mind. I’d scour all the apps you already have for a solution. Otherwise

The two I’d suggest are either Koala or AUM.

AUM is not cheap but is lightweight and extremely versatile.
Koala is a fun app and if I recall, not crazy expensive.

One app I would not recommend is DM1. It’s a great app on its own but the Link support is finicky. Which is another factor to consider. Not all apps are airtight and up to date with Link.

Korg has a couple Link apps too. And I think there are a couple Link to or from midi clock apps that might have tap tempo ( sometimes mappable), though most Korg apps do Not have Link
