New Macbook Pro M4 Pro 14" vs 16" - same performance?

Post by GusHage » Wed Nov 06, 2024 12:36 pm

Hello guys

I'm currently rocking a Macbook Pro 15" from 2014 with pretty much the top specs from that time; quad core, 16GB ram, 1TB SSD. I'm looking to finally upgrade to Apple silicon and with the new M4 chips, I think it's time.

My most important needs are for Ableton (currently 11, but gonna finally install 12) + my Push 2 (perhaps upgrading to 3). It seems to me, that the M4 Pro (14 core, that's 10 performance cores) is the most suitable for my needs, as I'm not looking at GPU-intensive work, really. My current questions are then the following:

- Do you agree that the M4 Pro is 'enough'? and 48GB of ram? (Planning on staying on at least 1TB SSD [omg so expensive wtf]...)
- Do you know why the 16" M4 pro Macbook is so much more expensive with (otherwise) the exact same specs? (M4 Pro 14 core, 48GB ram, 1TB storage)
- Do you know of any reasons to go for the 16" for making music? Higher clock speed? Less thermal throtteling? Larger cache - something??

The specification says the 16" has 140W power supply vs 96 on the 14".

I'm not particularly interested in the 16 unless there's a siginificant performance-reason to choose it.

I know I may simply have to wait for some more benchmarks to availabe...

Thanks in advance for any responses!
