Bug: Random explosion of sound in my ears

Post by mf_jules » Sun Nov 03, 2024 12:04 am

Hello, I have been experiencing a bug that has been quite detrimental to my workflow (and my ears). It typically happens while recording guitar through my Scarlett solo. Every couple of minutes or so, seemingly randomly there is an insane spike of the track volume from normal levels to infinity. The first time this happened to me I physically threw my headphones across the room in fear and has ruined several sessions for me.

What is peculiar is it happens while all else seems to be working as usual, the CPU usage is stable, lag minimal, no unexpected inputs to the interface. Anyone have any ideas? I included a short clip of what this looks like, without the audio.

Maybe you've built up a feedback loop. You should use a limiter at the end of the channel.

No, this is happening to me since Ableton Live 12.1 recent updates as well, in a session using Echo which was last opened before the updates. Before the recent updates, I had a smooth transition into Echo, where there is now a noise blast.

I have thoroughly deconstructed the path of the signal and the levels. There is no reason for that much level feedback.

I am experiencing a sudden noise blast..

@mf_jules, I suggest you file a bug report. I will be!

It's a known issue when the audio driver disengages from the OS and an audio program is running. I've seen it off and on in several DAWs over the decades I've used audio software. Unfortunately, Focusrite interfaces are the worst for this issue. Make sure you're running the latest OS and driver updates.

Over the decades in several DAWs I have worked with I have seen in the release notes more than a few times:

"BUGFIX: intermittent noise blast due to x y z is now resolved"

There is no reason Echo works in newer sessions and is not, only in this older session, when as you imply but it's not applicable here, that the audio device is disengaged.

I'm using a $1600 RME interface, and this issue is 100% reproducible for me. Old session, as soon as Echo plays in one section, BANG. In a new session with Echo, no issues.

We'll see what support says anyway. They have the best possible understanding.
