MIDI track output: All Outs

Post by agustinvolpe » Thu Aug 15, 2024 5:56 am

Not sure if this has come up before, but there’s a simple yet valuable feature that most major DAWs offer: an “All Outs” option for MIDI tracks.
Just like the handy “All Ins” in the MIDI input options, having an “All Outs” choice would be a game-changer. It would streamline workflows by allowing users to send MIDI data to multiple outputs from a single track, eliminating the need for duplicates and keeping the workspace clean.

Thanks for considering this—it would really elevate our Live experience.

Additionally, if you’re on the Centercode feature request platform, this suggestion is also listed there under Suggestion ID L12-SUG-2537.
Every bit of support helps to get this feature on Ableton’s radar!

I sometimes have a MIDI source, or multiple MIDI sources (different generators for example) within multiple chains inside a MIDI rack.

That track will have zero audio on it. It will be set to No MIDI outs.

Then, on multiple tracks, I select that track for MIDI IN, and then each chain of the MIDI rack is accessible. Choosing "Post FX" works for me to get the individual MIDI notes from the chain in the first rack into the devices I want.

Doing the above totally minimizes duplicates for me.

It is an interesting idea to output to multiple tracks or "all outs" but also sounds potentially loud!

That's interesting, though that’s a different use case.
It wouldn’t solve the need for duplicates when you’re running MIDI to outboard gear, (for example sending program changes/CC).

This is what outboard gear MIDI control looks like as of 12.1.5:

This is what it would look like if this was implemented:
