Post by jondasutra » Wed Nov 09, 2005 2:18 am

How do you get, or how do you make that Dr. Dre Westcoast high pitch string type haunting sound that is used in songs like Gin and Juice, Murder Was The Case, etc............
Can I buy it, make it, download it.........................

Some pretty fresh westcoast sounds can be found on the MicroKorg's presets.

Although Dre has a vast collection of synthesizers from the moog onwards, he makes extensive use of a Triton.

99% of the Westcoast sounds you will hear come from the Triton, especially leads and drums. The EMU Mophatt also has verrrry nice hip hop drums and some melodic patches to match.

old schoolers sample but if you use FLP ... its the Gangsterwhine patch .. damn i can't remember the name of that synth in that program ... Oh well if you have it you can find it. I haven't used that shit in like a year. Thank you Live.

how to program a westcoast whistle:

osc1:sine
osc2:square at lower volume and 3-8 cents uper or lower than osc1

polyphony: 1

portamento actrivatet (aka glide) : the value is depending on the synth u use but use it plenty :-)

(the waveforms are classic examples. teke whatever sounds good to you!)

My ATC1 can produce that sound with no problem.
Dre has one. 8)

If you own Reason 3 with its Combinator you can build something like that very easy!

Take a sample of the sound (Just as a reference) Then use various subtractors and a Scream distortion unit(s) and reverb!
And do not use the scream une too much.

Think u will get fine results

around 1992, when songs like "Nothin' but a G-Thang" and "Dre Day" came out, I believe the MiniMoog was popular with Dr. Dre (this was before Triton (1997?), VSTi, etc...of course).

oh of course an atc1, atc-x or the other one of studio electronics synths can do this job perfect! These analog synths are the most often used ana.-synths in rnb and hip hop!

i think you can also get very good results with other hardware and the softmoogs, but i thought/hoped u own reason!
