Loading "VST Plug-In System Folders" crashes osx..

I purchased Ableton Live 5, new, a couple days ago, and then updated to 5.0.2. No VST plugins load, and in Preferences when I try to press "On" for "Use VST Plug-in System Folders" Live crashes.
If there is a VST that is causing this, how can I disable it?
Furthermore... what else can I do?

renaming the Audio directories in the base and user Library doesn't solve the problem. Live creates new Audio directories for plugin preferences. Loads no VSTs. and then crashes when I try to turn on the VST folder.
