Clicks and Pops while recording Audio

not a strictly a Live problem, i think, since i also get clicks and pops while trying to record my guitar in the Demo Version of Pro Tools M-Powered.

but i use :

Live 4.1.4. running under
Win XP on a
AMD Athlon 1,67 Ghz PC
with 512 RAM
and with 2x80G - 7200 rpm hard drives
and a M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 sound card.

here's a short sample of the noises i get while trying to record my CLEAN guitar

i never noticed the noises while trying to record heavy distorted guitar tracks, but now it's time for some clean sounds and i can't get them.

so far i've tried:

recording in mono;
recording in stereo;
changing the guitar;
changing /skipping the multieffect processor-pedal;
changing / skipping the amp;
changing / skipping the external mixer;
defragmenting;
setting the Live Temp folder on different drives and partitions;
increasing the Buffer size to the point where latency is unacceptable (1024);
changing the depth bit (16 / 24);
and whatever else i could think of and don't remember right now.

i would be really thankful to anyone pointing me in the right direction from here !!! there MUST be something that can be done, there shurely IS something i forgot to think about ! any ideeas please ?

If you have changed the buffer size and are still getting crackles unless it is very high then it might be a resource issue. How many processes do you have running? You'll want to kill all of your start up processes that are not needed.

Check this site out for optimization info if have not already.

I have to say that I run all my apps 24/96 witha buff of 512........however.........only in live........sometimes it just jumps to 64 buff.........that causes problems with clicking and popping/etc.

The only solution I have found is to quit live, open the soundcard and force it back to 512....

kennerb, you're the man, thanx a lot for the link, hopefuly i'll find something there which will solve my problem. if not, i guess it's time to put my PC on ebay. or something.

eyeknow, i know what you mean, though it never happened to me, but you don't have to quit Live to change the buffer size, just go to

Options / Preferences / Audio / Driver Type

select "No Audio", change buffer size, than back to Preferences again, select your soundcard. it's much faster than restarting live.

FYI I cant get my audiphile to work properly in asio mode. no irq conflicts, everything pared down tot he max - and i still get one lcik every 40 secs or so - no matter what bufer size. I have done everthing including messing with pci latency......

anyway

I can get 100% click free operation using the directx drivers at a 20.3 ms latency. That may be a bit high for your needs - but using directx drivers could give you a clean signal.

Can't do that with audiophile 192 here......you have to quit application first

It only happens once in a great while.............so it's not bad
