Sidechaining.. how? Kicks that turn off the strings.. for eg

Hey all

I just layby'd my copy of Ableton, after using the demo for a while and using the full version at a mate's house for some time. Can't wait to get my full copy in a few weeks!

Is there a way to side chain currently using Ableton?

What I wanna do is have, say.. my strings or pads... cut out when the kick plays. So that it gets that fat pulsing sound. And no.. I dont want to hand automate it or play a pad note on the offbeat. I am after true sidechain-gating.

Reason does this exceptionally easily, using the CV output to control volume levels on the mixer.

What is the best way to do it in Ableton? I read somewhere you need a different kind of compressor.. but alas those were not for mac os x.

Is sidechaining possible in Ableton as is? Or do I need to spend more money for this feature? If it's not a feature.. I guess this is my request for version 6!

PS - I do apologise if this has been covered a billion times already.

Scottie
