Quiet PC's for the studio

Post by elemental » Wed Feb 08, 2006 2:42 pm

Easy peeps,

I'm in the process of building me a new pc. Sorted out everything else, now looking at www.quietpc.com for cases / cpu coolers / psu / hard drive enclosures.

Anyone got any experience with this stuff, is it worth the extra money?

Thanks

its worth the extra money if your cpu is in the same room as a mic, or mics, that you intend to record live sound sources with.

otherwise, I think its a complete waste of time and money...

I bought all my case fans and CPU fan from them, made a huge difference. I highly recommend the Antec Quiet line of cases and power supplies.

Antec Sonata/Sonata 2 for your case!!!!! I've no need for hard drive enclosers as the Sonata has rubber mounts for the drives (2 x Seagate). I put a Vantec Stealth 120mm fan in and an Arctic Cooling cpu cooler. I replaced the 380w psu (not beefy enough) with a Hiper 520w model......switched on it's just, and I mean JUST audible.
You can pay silly money trying to quieten your PC but you've got to decide how much cash your gonna pour into it and how "quiet" you want it.

I have purchased a Quiet Power Supply and CPU cooling fan but it was still to much noise for my taste. So i've put my PC in another room with a small isolated hole in the wall. Now it is dead silent in my studio!! If you have an extra room, go for it!
AthlonXP 2700+, WinXP SP2, Live 5.2.2, M-Audio Audiophile 2496, MalletKat Pro, Evolution MK-449c...

Another site to check out is http://www.endpcnoise.com

I have a very quiet PC. You can't even tell it is on. Well that was before I got the 120mm case fan. Now it is still pretty quiet i'd have to hold a mic up to the fan intake to get it to pic up any noise. I got the Fanless motherboard, quiet powersupply, quiet CPU fan, quiet case fan, harddrive enclosure, fanless videocard and rounded cables. (not cause they make the computer quieter, they do but with the air flow in my comp I doubt that the flat cables would flap around too much but casue they are so much easier to use) It make a big difference.

You could also go water cooling system
