What Are Some Must-Have FREE VSTi's?

Post by STRATEGY_510 » Sat Feb 25, 2006 11:16 pm

I just took the plunge and updated my Live Lite 4 to Live 5.03 and was able to successfully upgrade on my desktop and laptop (THANK YOU ABLETON!)

What are some good free VTi's to get me started?

I grabbed a couple of pianos off KVR so far, just need a few basic things that cover what's not included with Live 5 (I did not buy Operator..)

Thanks,

Synth 1

Crystal

FreeAlpha

Cygnus

Augur

Asynth (donationware, but worth it!)

That, along with voyager, will really get you going!

Any of Guido's vsti's: Wurlitzer, rhodes & organ emu's are amazing.
At the moment he is also working on a physically modelled trumpet vsti Milestone(& a sax model) that have to be heard to be believed.
Also keep ypur eye on Grainz a granular synth that is still in beta at the moment, has problems with Live - but the author is working on it - killer sounds from this one, similar to reasons maelstrom.
Also Shortcircuit Free limited to 2 instances with max polyphony of 2, but outstanding for mangling samples - especially utilising the microgater for granular madness.
For analogue emus try MinimogueVA & Arppe2600va
& a list of free vsti's wouldn't be complete without the amazing Crystal
There's shitloads more - checkout KVR

KarmaFX Plug in Bundle - includes the rather awesome Karma FX Modular Synth - and yes it is a module based modular with sample modules / ringmod / fm / multibreakpoint envelopes / filters (lots of them) / step seq's and step modulators / eq's / lfo's / hfo's / and audio input modules etc... also so it can double as a custom modular FX device :D

That said this would be my advice on which synths to downlaod

1.KarmaFx Modular
2.Synth1
3.Crystal
4.Cygnus
5.Odo'd Seeq One
6.Ugo's Motion , Texture and String Theory
7.Voayger
8.PolyIblit
9.SuperwaveP8
10.Lallapalooza Lite
11.Nutseeq
12.Plugsound Free
13.Asynth
14.Foorius
15.Iopolong's - Slifty / Splonki and Slopy

Would be my top 15+ recommendations (IMHO of course) others opinion may vary.
Also check out MDSP / GVST / SMEX / SLIM SLOW SLIDER / EPHONIC etc for some killer freeware FX .
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....
