(O.T.) SL-25 midi mapping

I don't have mine with me, but...

In the editing software there's a setting for template number, on that same page is a setting for number of templates in a group.

I made a 4 page template one page for each Send A/B/C/D assigned to the top row of knobs on the left side. The Send A template is #1, B is #2 etc. I loaded them into templates in the SL25 with template #1 on the lowest preset number, #2 after that, #3 after that, and #4 after that.

Now when I hit the button next to the row of knobs the LCD shows Send A track 1, Send A track 2... through Send A track 8. When I hit that same button again, it jumps to the next template, so the LCD changes to Send B track 1 etc. If I hit it again I get to the Send C template, once more I get the Send D template, once more it starts over again at the Send A template.

I hope that makes sense...

cool. so is that how one might be able to cycle through an assignment of more than 8 volume faders in a template?

I was trying to figure out how they did the Reason Automapping where you can cycle within a template to mixer channels 9 and above using the buttons you described.

Interesting. I need to delve into that. It would help immensely with assignments in session view.

Each button/knob/slider/encoder can only have one assignment per template.

So... one template for Volume/pan/A-B fader/Send A/whatever for tracks 1-8 and another template for tracks 9-16.

ah, ok.

The only issue I seem to be having with my Remote 25SL is that when I switch templates while Live is playing back, it causes a glitch in the audio playback.

weird. It makes me not want to switch templates during a set because it is very noticeable.

Hit Global, go up untli you see "Pitch Joy Mod" in the upper left LCD.

Adjust the key sensitivity with the knob under the word "Set"

You can also hold down a key and turn the "set" button to get the feel right.

It seems the "Set" button is the aftertouch range over which 0-127 is assigned.

Ya, I had found the set knob, but I believe that is only for aftertouch sensitivity, so it only affects the pressure sensitivity after the key is struck. Doesn't seem to change the key velocity at all. I think only the six velocity curves change that, but I find them insufficient, as there isn't really an overall sensitivity, like the pads, if you know what I mean.

hey novationers, I was wondering, when I open a live set, there are (oh just say) around 10 channels that are muted. On the SL-25, the buttons I have assigned to Live's channel activations are set to ON. How do I get the SL-25 to recognize what channels are switched off in any set in LIVE so it can turn the corrolating buttons OFF on the SL-25?- that way I don't have to hit them twice to activate a channel.

Can you guys elaborate on how you use the editor? I have tried reading the help file, but it sucks. MIDI newb here.

Basically, I start a new template, name it and hit OK,. Then I see the screen of the keyboard and knobs, etc. . How do you go about assigning the various parameters of live (faders, knobs, sends, on off buttons, etc. . . ) to live?

(warning, I don't have Live or an SL25 in front of me, I'm at work)

This won't matter once automapping comes out, but it's good practice in the meantime.

Get the templates from the http://www.novationmusic.com web site, there's a Live template and an SL25 template.

OR make your own template for both. On the SL25 hold down EDIT and hit a key/knob/switch/fader. Then look at the left LCD, scroll up/down until you find the page for MIDI assignments, if the key/knob/switch/fader isn't assigned the MIDI assignment page will be bare, only the text 'no assignment' (or something like that) will appear. Turn the knob below 'no assignment' to change it to CC, RPN, NRPN etc. Then you can assign it a CC number, note number, program change number, select which USB and MIDI ports to send that command, etc.

So, go through all the key/knob/switch/faders you want to use. Just use different CC numbers for them all, start at cc 1 and count up, whatever works.

Save that off to a template on the SL25.

Open Live, hit MIDI learn, select a function and twiddle the key/knob/switch/fader you want to assign to that function. Turn off MIDI learn and watch it work and move on.

Save the Live set as something like _SL25 template (use the _ so it comes up before 'A' in the alphabet). In Live's preferences you can set that as your default template, if you want.

The stuff from the novation site is 2 templates (1 template group) to upload to the SL25 and a Live set with all the controls already mapped.

Once you get it going it's really straightforward. I like to make a few different Live templates, one with 8 tracks of audio, one with 8 tracks of MIDI and another with 4 tracks of each.

ya, the online template will save you some time. I just migrated into the computer music world from hardwareland, so I was a little intimidated at first about Live and the SL-25 communicating. Once I mapped out my general controls and started having fun with things, I realized there was a Live template online and downloaded that (and the editor that it didn't come with even though there is a DVD that came with it) It was good practice nevertheless...
