Light a few candles, to get you in the mood, then use proper protection before consumating your relationship. Let us all now how good the virgin was afterwards.

nobby- congradulations on being a guinea pig!

anyways, so far i've loved my macbook but there are some virgin issues you'll most likely have to deal with, if u dont, then damn you are lucky and one of the few.

its a known problem that these new machines come with an idle processor "whine" . it has to do with one of the cores being unused majority of the time during lesser activies (web surfing) or being idle. this problem can quickly be resloved by downloading the mirror widget, openning it, letting it run for 1 second and then closing it. (soon as you hear the whine) do this and it will solve your problem until the next reboot.

there are speculations afloat about why this is happening, some think its to do with the speed stepping function. anyways, its a minor problem.

the lesser problem ( fexable by sending it back to apple) is the idle screen darken function. if the screen goes idle, you hear a hissing noise. this problem can be fixed. i do not have this problem but i know some do.

anyways, those are the only 2 on going issues with the new machines.

besides that they are amazing.

Do you know whether they occur on all configurations or just certain models?

its been said all.

the problem is out there, people are trying to isolate it.

i've heard 2gb ram models dont hear the whine noise.

who knows for sure though. apple hasn't made a statement about it yet.

you can only hear the noise in a somewhat quiet environment.

But that's the point with us musicians --- when it's quiet we want it to be really quiet because we listen so much the rest of the time. That applies to me anyway, which is why I returned the Firebox, which caused the FW port to emit a high tone.

Have made sure i have nothing to do this weekend but install Logic, Live 5.2b, and the Grid Pro Beta... hmm.. nerd heaven..

you got logic ? god i'm still itching between logic and live. i dont want both cuz i dont have time to master both right now.

Format- yeah we def do need it to be quiet but like i said besides those two issues (one of them being solved by widget, the other a total fix) the machine is very very silent.

Hey all,

Definitely some strange issues with the Macbook! I'm on Macbook #2 now. The first one lived fast and died young. Real young in this case. The one I have now is dead silent and thus far I'm very impressed/happy with it. I have heard the noises on other Macbooks - the screen noise is unacceptable, and the processor noise varies from model-to-model.

The Live 5.2 betas have been running great for me but I haven't really taxed it hard yet.

My biggest audio-related problems have been with the Trigger Finger. Strangely, it works fine on the right USB port but it doesn't work on the left port. AMS identifies it correctly on both ports, but if you try to use it with Live (or Garage Band for that matter) it won't work; you can't assign controls, play Impulse/Simpler, etc. Live recognizes it just fine (listed in Preferences as TF), but it just doesn't work on the left port.

Also, I'm having problems with the universal version of Enigma. I grew to like this app on my PC and I was psyched when they released the universal version. This version doesn't work for me though. I've tried it with my TF and a few other M-Audio devices and Enigma doesn't recognize them. I also dl'ed Enigma onto some Macbooks at the Apple Store near me and it didn't work on those machines either.

I spoke with M-Audio tech already but we didn't really make any progress. Anybody else have these issues? I haven't tried any non M-Audio controllers yet.

My other USB devices work fine on both ports - cameras, drives, etc.

Lastly, a big thanks to everyone on this forum. I don't post much because I'm too busy trying out everyone's tricks

Joe.

It's good to hear from an early adopter like you.... I'm really just holding my breath until I order one of these.

Yes thankfully i've not got a gig in the next two weeks once i get the machine, so i can have a proper testing session with my UC33 etc before i go any where near a stage...

having said that my G4-400 laptop i'm using tonight for a gig, is held together with gaffer tape, and is down to about 400 megs free memory.. and if i can scrape through a night of nonsense with that.. i can't imagine how much fun i'm going to have with this new beast...

yes warantee is a good idea... i think i'll get it at the end of the month before i take it out of the house!!

Nobby, I see from your sig you are running 2 powerbooks for gigs. How are you using them? And will you keep using 2, or just use the Macbook?

Yes i'll keep using the two as there are two of us, doing a live/back2back/dj/mashup hybrid thing... We don't do any midi sync on stage, generally just hit that space bar and nudge that tempo for Sync...

The new machine will just enable us to experiment with syncing visuals on one machine, and generally just filling up our live sets with untold amounts of needless VSTis and strange Audio Units hopefully...

hmm.. can't wait..
