College Park Jam

Post by mylkoa » Wed Mar 22, 2006 12:31 pm

Hello!

Thanks for your interest in the College Park Jam.

Please post a vote on what day of the week and what times
are best for you to attend and participate. In approximately
one week from today (3/22/06) I will tally the "votes" and
I will attempt to reserve the room for the day that is
convenient for the most people. I will post the reservation
confirmation, and any further announcements on this thread.

Also, I titled this thread "Jam" but I'm not trying to steer this
event. I leave it up to the community to decide how and what you
want to make it. I invite you to contribute your ideas as to how
we should structure our time with the resources we have. Whether
it could be a performance showcase, a jamm session, some lectures,
a general meeting, or a combination of things, that's up to the
group to decide.

Your suggestions and thoughts are welcome.

Thanks again, and hope to be making some music with you soon!
Andy

Monday, Wednesday. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday work well for me.
I am out of town Thursday April 6 - Saturday 15 for my spring back vacation.
I would really like to do this and meet up with all of you.

FYI - If a time is settled for like Tuesay or a Sat. Aftertoon, it is easier for me to request work off 2 weeks in advance.

oh and is college park limited to College students?
Not as long as you have permission :)

I have a 700 Watt Matrix B-52 sound system, and I am willing to
store it at the site so nobody has to transport much equiptment to
and fro, however I need help transporting it from Baltimore to College
Park. It's not a large system, I used to cart it around in a Toyota
Camry, but a truck, van, SUV or hatchback would be the best.

Can someone help me with this? It's only one trip, and it will make things a lot easier to have this event in the future since it will be stored in house.

DK, thank you for offering the mixer. If yours is 8 channel I think that would be ideal. If you want to bring your own PA that sounds fine, I just wonder about groups of people playing different stuff at the same time. I hope sound systems won't be competing for attention/volume and make a sonic mess. In any case, I think you should bring it, and if we find we want to use it, we will, and if not, then you won't have to bring it the next time.

Also, does anyone know someone or do VJ work themselves? What do you
think about adding that to the mix?

How about lights? Does anyone have small cheapo lights? I don't want to get too complicated or fancy, but I like decor and cool ambiance when I'm jamming. I have a small cheap flea market light that changes colors. I'm going to bring it and keep it in house. But if anyone has a lava lamp, small strobe, or something else, I say bring it. Or if anyone has something nice to hang on the walls, I can bring something to hang it with. there is even a scissor lift that I use often in the theatre, I can hang a large tapestry on the I-Beams in a few minutes. Again, I want to make this thing easy and simple so we can setup and tear down quick, so I wouldn't mention this stuff if it wasn't easy to do. Plus, the room is painted completely black.

I have a mono wireless transmitter, so we don't have to be too restricted
by cabling. However, it is mono, so I don't know how performers feel about that. Does anyone else have another mono transmitter so we can combine forces
and have a stereo pair?

There are school chairs in the space, the kind with small desks attached
to them, but I highly reccomend for people to bring blankets, cushions, beach chairs, bean bags or the like... stuff that you would mind putting on the floor.

Since the last gathering at the Black Cat didn't have a lot of dancing going on, I see this as going more in the direction of a chill out, sit/stand around, talking/hanging out/tinkering sort of thing (versus a booming club type event). What sort of thoughts does everyone have in this regard? Can we add somethings in this vain? Should we be weary of some issues? Anyone have prior experience at user group meetings?

What do you all think about scheduling performances? Should we designate
some time to individual performances, and some other time to free form jam/tinker and socializing? If anyone wants solo time, please speak up. And if anyone thinks it's not a good idea, please tell us what you think. I propose the first half of the time to be performances, and the second half to be free form for jams. that way, we can watch fellow artists, and have inspiration for the second half where we can ask questions, trade tips, and jam out.

I'm glad to see this coming together. I think the first user group will be a feeling out thing, but we have access to a good amount of resources to make this thing a regular occurence. The fact that we have a good free venue at our disposal, and we don't don't need a whole lot of preperation to put this on works well in our favor IMHO.

Cheers,
Andy

You are in baltimore? Anyone coming from that direction that can help?

I plan on bringing a small mixer and amplification system, it is compact, sounds good but also fairly powerful (500w w/250w sub) and will fit in my car...

i was thinking:

set up (which will take a while) and we have a target time to start playing. this would be promoted to some extent TBD as a free experimental electronic music exposition. Before playing, we have a user group meeting where we talk about stuff, there is some kind of sequence to perform worked out. Someone has a video camera, mini documentary ensues...

College Park User Group Meeting Information

Location:
Univeristy Of Maryland College Park
Tawes Fine Arts Building (Building#141)
Room 0241

Date Time:
April, 8. 2006
Approximately 4-8PM

Campus map can be found at:
http://www.ling.umd.edu/cuny2004/2003PDFMap.pdf

Details:
Sorry, I know the map is small, but it can still be usefull.
Tawes can be found in square G3. Please park in lot 1B.
As you face Tawes theatre you will notice large columns
at the entrance, look to the left and find the blue campus
emergency phone on the corner. Go to that phone and
follow the short road up to the north side of the building
(it's a loading dock/small parking lot labeled a*1). The
meeting room is directly accesible from this parking lot.
I will leave the door open and I will play some music
so you can't miss it. Please don't park in the loading dock,
you might get ticketed or towed.

If you are bringing heavy gear/stuff, don't worry, I have a good
cart and the room is accessible from the ground floor. Just
park in lot 1B, come and find us, and you can take the cart
to your car to unload. Peace of cake, I promise.

If you have any questions or need help the day of the meeting,
please call my cell at 410.908.8308

Look forward to jamming with you soon :)
Andy
