AbletonDJ.com - New Community

Post by AbletonDJ » Fri Apr 14, 2006 5:01 pm

Hi all!

I was playing with the idea for some time now and I just setted up this new website.

http://www.abletondj.com/

It's a board for all people dj-ing / performing with Ableton live.

Looking for people to help me get this thing up and running!
I'm open for your suggestions and if we manage to grow, I will need a team to mod the site too.

Hope you will like it. Let's make it a nice place with tutorials, info and hot new stuff.

You should get invision powerboard. Its way better than the fre phpbb. Trust me, if your site starts to get traffic, you'll start getting sql errors. The phpbb people are not very helpfull.

The powerboard is more resistaqnt to errors and has better support. Also it's easier to instal a ton of cooler features to customize your board.

I own a website www.midwest-underground.com

Check it out.

We have free upload/download and anything that gets uploaded gets put into the playlist to be broadcast over our netradio station. We've also got games and a bunch of other cools stuff.

Our actual attendance is down right now, but we were hot for a while. In the next few months we are going to be reorganizing it to really have a more comprehensive section supporting producers- specializing in local producers but not limited to.

We started out phpbb. It sucked. When we ported over the database was so corrupt that the board did't make any sense at all, so we had to roll everything.

Another cool thing is if you need a feature, but a mod for it doesn't exist yet, you can have them program the mod for you. thats how we got our radiostation to access the files that are uploaded as a playlist.

I don't know, in my experience phpbb is pretty scalable, plus you get ui points just because everyone is familiar with it...

Thank you for the info :)

When the board starts to get bigger, I will switch to Vbulletin I think. But first we need to build that community. As more people come, we can start to make it a nice community together. When there is enough activity, I will also need some moderators. Let's make abletondj.com a new home!

I've gone with YaBB (Yet another Bulletin Board).
  • There is a friendly and helpful 'creators' forum whichh is well maintained and updated,
  • It is almost open source (a friend of mine installed one at the same time I did and decided to really get into Perl, started writing modules for the board and is now alongside the others credited with the latest version's creation),
  • There is a 'sister' site exclusively for modules (with it's own forum),
  • It is very easy to install,
  • It does not require a database (although I believe you can choose to use one) - it sits in the cgi-bin,
  • It is very secure in comparison to pHpBB (so I have heard),
  • Very easy to use for both admin(s) and regular members,
    and it's free.
Have a look at mine.
It's open for guests at the moment, so we are having the occasional casino spam posts, but that is only until it gets a little more popular (then it's "If your name's not on the list, your not gettin' in!").

May I ask what this (official) forum lacks that yours (at www.abletondj.com) has?

Ofcourse!

At http://www.abletondj.com we are trying to create a community for people dj-ing with Ableton products only. Besides that, there is some space for other stuff and we're willing to edit the place to what people want. It's just another home. The forums here are perfect, we just wanted to create another nice place, for dj-ing with Ableton software!

Hmm. There already is an established community for DJ'ing with Ableton at http://www.abletonlivedj.com with 400 registered users, and over 3000 posts, and there's the Google group at http://groups.google.com/group/Live-DJs which was up and running a long time before ours was. I don't want to turn this into a bitch fight, but you're telling me you didn't do a whois on variations of the domain names 'Ableton' 'Live' and 'DJ' before you registered yours?

Peace.
